Having spent some time playing,
Having spent some time mingling,
Having spent some time indulging in sights,
One says I want to be one with the God, by dinner time!
The other coward says I am suffering eating, working and mingling!
Our Basavapriya KuDala Chennabasvanna went away without heeding to the wishes of these two!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Sharana Hadapada Appanna comments on how commoners spend all their lives in mundane activities, eventually get dissatisfied with them and try to reach God at the last stages of life. He says that the God will not be available for them.
We spend lot of time playing the games we like and get unlimited fun out of it. We seldom think of anything else, we seldom like anything else. We are immersed in these games.
We spend all our resources in acquiring friends and enjoying their company. Nothing else occurs to us. Our minds would not entertain any other thought!
We enjoy going places and seeing sights. We never consider it a waste of time. Nothing else makes sense to us. We are on top of the world with our mundane lives!
Eventually, all these mundane activities seem boring to us. Appanna equates this boredom to the ‘dinner time’ when we are hungry and long for becoming one with God. Some even start complaining that they are actually suffering all these activities of playing, socializing and working. Appanna calls them cowards and says that they will not be able to reach God with these last minute wishes!
Appanna is advocating introducing Godliness to our lives early and stay with it through the life with all the respect and attention it deserves. We must make Him an important part of our life journey, and not just the eventual destination!
It is very easy to say and very apt to feel that ‘I did it all’, ‘it is all mine’ when success comes to us. It is very easy to be immersed in our own games, social circles, sights and sounds. It takes lot of discipline to recognize that there is a super power which guides it all. The faster we get such realization in life, the easier it is to reach Him.

Let us make God our companion in life’s journey!

COMMENTARY
In this Vachana Sharana Shanmukaswamy addresses the attributes of true ‘SaMga’ the companionship or company. Man is a social being. He strives and longs for the company of others. We say that the birds of the same feather flock together, implying that there must be something in common for a companionship to develop. The question then is ‘what should be the quality or attribute of this common entity?’ since we are branded by the company we keep. We are told that to sore like an Eagle, we must be in the company of Eagles.
Shanmukaswamy says that a true companionship is one in which the mind of one acts as a mirror and reflects the mind of the other. The companionship thus facilitates the view of your own mind. It enables you to introspect, analyze and shape your own mind. In a true companionship, the perceptions of all the individuals involved would be the same. They all think alike.  Their knowledge blends together. Their understanding has a common basis. In a true companionship, the natures, feelings and views of all involved merge and evolve together. Thus, a true companionship is the one that leads towards salvation and self-realization. A bad companionship on the other hand leads to blindness and downfall and takes one away from salvation.
Companionship is a must. Companionships form automatically as we work for the same company, as we travel by the same bus or subway to work daily, as we see each other in common gatherings, as we belong to the same professional society, etc. It is then up to us to develop the companionship into a fruitful one for all the individuals involved. It should be an equal partnership taking us to the common goal in the spiritual or professional path. We must examine our relationships, cultivate the common traits that aid us in the positive directions and curb the negativity.

Let us reflect on our company we keep!

How can I say that I have washed and cleansed my mind?
The mind fools and harasses even those who say they have controlled it and stopped it from wandering!

Those who say we know the beauty of our Lord Guhesvara, should be without the mind, you see Siddharaamayya!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana addressed to Sharana Siddharaamayya, Allama Prabhu comments on the ways of the mind. He stresses on the importance of cleansing the mind to see the Lord, while saying that the process of cleansing the mind does not come easy.

We have said that the inherent nature of the mind is to wander. Mind is a monkey on steroid in general.  It is a must to control the mind although controlling it is not easy and requires appropriate knowledge, constant awareness and effort.

Allama Prabhu wonders how one can say he/she has washed and cleansed the mind. The mind is so dynamic that it fools and harasses even those who say they have controlled it. Indeed, in our daily lives we are subjected to all the six passions of mind (kama – desire, kroda – anger, lobha – greed, moha- delusory emotional attachment, madha – pride, maatsarya – jealousy) on a constant basis. We notice that we are being subjected to one or more of these and make every effort to get out of their influence. This freedom from passions lasts a little while and the mind reverts to the same as soon as we start feeling that we have conquered the passion and controlled or cleansed the mind.

In general, we use the polluted mind through which we try to come up with mechanisms to cleanse the mind. How can a polluted mind cleanse itself?

Allama Prabhu declares those who say that they know the beauty of the Lord, should have to be without a mind! He is not implying that these individuals are mindless. He is stressing that to see the Lord one must have a pure and unpolluted mind, meaning that they should have conquered all the passions of the mind. Indeed, seeing the beauty of the Lord and becoming one with the Lord are synonymous to one being the Lord. When one sheds the six passions, he/she achieves the cleanse mind and becomes the Lord. He sees the Lord in everyone and everything around him/her.

Let us Mind the Mind!

Vachana 118: Naanemba Ahamkaara – Ego

When the ego called ‘I’ dawned,
the storm of falsehood, cunningness and deceitfulness took birth.
Soon after the birth of that storm, the light of knowledge extinguished.
Soon after the light of knowledge extinguished,
the so called wise men and knowledgeable elders engulfed by darkness were ruined beyond the limits, you see Guhesvara!

COMMENTARY
Allama Prabhu comments on the effects of ego in this Vachana. He says that as soon as the ego or ‘I-ness’ dawns, the storm of all the bad traits such as falsehood, cunningness and deceitfulness takes birth. This storm extinguishes the light of knowledge. This in turn will ruin even the most knowledgeable individuals beyond recoverable limits.
Containment of ego has been the message of several of our previous Vachanas. It is very common that success brings up the I-ness in humans. We start feeling that ‘I did it’, ‘it is mine’, ‘only I can do it’, ‘I don’t need anybody’, ‘I am superior ‘, so on. We forget that our success is really dependent on several individuals and entities around us. Not only we forget to acknowledge it, but we also start justifying whatever we say or do is right. We lie, become cunning and do not hesitate to deceive to maintain what we have and what we want. Essentially, we will have lost our ‘light of knowledge’. Without this light, we stride in darkness and reach the limits of no return.

Some argue that ego is needed to be successful. They probably mean that knowledge, confidence, training, hard work are needed to be successful. Once successful, an extreme effort to be aware of the success and the factors contributing to it is a must for the individual to not wander away in the darkened alleys created by the ego.

Let us make an all-out effort to curb the ‘I-ness’.

KANNADA COMMENTARY

Plucking flowers from the plant sowed by others,
Bringing water from the lake built by all the people in the town,
Worshipping, showing off to all the people in the town,
Does the merit of such worship go to the flower? To the water?
To the people in the town? To the person who worships?
I don’t understand this, please tell me! says Ambigara Choudayya!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Ambigara Chaudayya tries to drive home how we insert ‘I and mine’ into everything we do and do not realize that everything we have really belongs to someone else, in particular to that ultimate truth, called God. He uses the rituals used in worshipping as examples.
We pluck flowers from the plants sowed by others for our worship. Granted that we use our physical capability to go to the plant, pluck the flowers. It might very well be we will have paid for those flowers. We earned the money we paid. But, from where does the earning power comes to us? As we continue this line of thinking, it becomes obvious that whatever the merit we receive due to the worship with those flowers, really belongs to a whole host of entities, ultimately to the creator of them, the super soul.
We can extend the above logic to the water we use in the worship. The water comes from the lakes built by others. We invite the whole town to come and witness our worshipping. The merit we aspire to receive from this worship truly must be shared among all the individuals and entities contributing to the worship. Yet, we say that ‘we did it’ and ‘it is mine’.
Ambigara Chaudayya is essentially advocating getting rid of the ‘I’ in what we do and developing the humility to realize that everything we have belongs to Him. The worship conducted with such selfless, humble ways is the true worship. Gaining such humility and defeating the ‘ego’ is the true worship and its merit.
Chaudayya is not commenting whether the ritualistic worship is good or bad. It is OK if one is comfortable in going through the rituals and they provide the environment and mindset to be with Him. It is important though to realize what we are doing and what we are using and appreciate to whom the credit should belong!

Let us develop the utmost humility and conquer the ‘I-ness’!

KANNADA COMMENTARY

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Ambigara Choudayya examines our ways of life to impress on how we go wrong. He uses four examples to show how we forego the true happiness when consumed by trivial aspects in life.

Water is an important part of our lives. We cannot live without water. It has become fashionable to hold a bottle of water all through the day. It is a must for our lives. But, can we ignore its destructive power when we are drowning in hot water saying that it is ‘just drinking water’? In small (appropriate) volume water saves our lives; as a flood it kills us. Realization of these extremes of its power is a must!

Fire can bring us a lot of enjoyment when it is small and utilitarian. It keeps us warm, cooks our food, lights our nights and is indispensable. But, can we ignore its power saying that ‘it is just a fire’ while it is burning the house? It is important to take precautions to make sure that we are not burnt by it.

We stomach sour and sweet dishes. We enjoy both types in appropriate quantities. A heavy Indulgent in either kind brings us pain. So are the good and bad deeds we perform in our lives.

Can we hold on to our ‘life’ when the body is taking its last breath? It is certainly beyond our control. If so, why make an all-out effort to stop it?

Ambigara Choudayya urges us to be mindful of what we do and what we have. Use them at the level appropriate to their utility and make sure we are not consumed by them.

Let us be ‘appropriate’, not ‘over indulgent’!

KANNADA COMMENTARY
