bEtaaLadaMte (like a ghost) kaaDuvudu.(will  haunt)

5.       VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Of those whose mind is polluted, the wandering (of mind) does not stop.
Of those whose mind does not stop wandering, devotion of Shiva (God) does not materialize.
The words of those in whom the devotion of Shiva has not materialized are false.
The mind of those immersed in illusion and not realizing (God) Guhesvara, will haunt them like a ghost!

6.       COMMENTARY

Allama Prabhu is emphasizing that the prerequisite to realizing the Divine is the purity of mind. We have said that the mind is a monkey jumping from branch to branch on the tree of desires.  The pollution of the mind is brought about by the six passions –  kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (attachment), madha (pride), matsarya (jealousy).  As long as our mind is polluted by these, the wandering does not end. As long as the wandering does not end, there is no room for the materialization of the devotion of  Shiva (Divine).  Worse yet, with the wandering mind one would be  under  the illusion of being a devotee of Shiva. Allama Prabhu says that the words of those individuals   who have not realized Shiva are never true and their mind haunts them like a ghost!

How can we develop the purity of mind? It has to come from within. It has to come from questioning the pursuit of material comforts and corresponding consequences. It has to come from the capability to distinguish between permanent bliss and instant gratification. The child is said to have born with a pure mind. The mind gets polluted through the experiences of the world. It is necessary then to become a child again. That is the purity of mind and that is the devotion of Shiva!

Let us strive for the purity of mind!

7.       KANNADA COMMENTARY

4.       TRANSLATION (WORDS)

ghanatara (of solid, great)  citrada (picture of) roopa (form)  bareyabahudallade (can be drawn)
praaNava (life, spirit, breath) bareyabahude ayyaa (can one draw sir)?
divyaagamaMgaLu (scriptures) hELida kreeyalli (as described in) dIkSheya (Initiate)  maaDabahudallade(can be performed)
bhaktiya (devotion) maaDabahude ayyaa (can  be initiated, Sir)?
praaNavaha bhaktiya(bhakti that has praaNa,breath) tanmaya nInu (you are within that).
I guNavuLLalli (in this attribute) nInihe(you are) illadalli(if not)  ninilla (you are not) guhEshvaraa(Guheshvara).

5.       VACHANA IN ENGLISH

One can draw the picture of a great (beautiful) body,
But can one draw life (breath) into it, Sir?
The devotee can be initiated through the prescriptions of great scriptures,
But, can one initiate devotion, Sir?
You are (within) immersed in the devotion that is full with life!
You are where that attribute is; if not, you are not there, Guhesvara.

6.       COMMENTARY

Allama Prabhu describes the characteristics of true devotion (Bhakti) in this Vachana.
One can draw the picture of a beautiful body or object, but can never insert breath or bring it to life. The body is material (physical) and the breath is immaterial (mental).  The teacher can utilize all the processes and procedures described in our scriptures to initiate the student into a devotee. But, can the teacher bring about the true devotion in him? Devotion is mental; it has to come from within the individual through his own feeling of it; no one can insert it into him. Allama Prabhu says that the Divine Guhesvara is immensely immersed in the devotion that is full of life; He is only there where such devotion exists!

The teacher (Guru) can teach and initiate the student into devotional and spiritual path. He can provide the necessary knowledge as gateway to eventual realization of the Divine. But, the initiative to not stay contented with the external rituals of worship but to see beyond it must come from the devotee himself. Anything short of that where the devotion is not the way of life is not true devotion. The Divine will not be anywhere close to a devotee who has not made his life and devotion one and the same!

Let us internalize devotion!

7.       KANNADA COMMENTARY

5.       VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Why would a Swan desire for milk while being in the ocean of milk?
Why would a bee search for fragrance while being in a flower?
What can I say about such deluded people who are indulging in other desires,
while being in the Linga (God), Guhesvara?

6.       COMMENTARY

Allama Prabhu comments on the state of the common man who does not even realize that he is already in where he should be. A swan swimming in the ocean of milk is aware of what it is swimming in and does not go look for the milk elsewhere. A bee inside the flower knows where it is and does not seek fragrance elsewhere. We are all part of that Divine; the Divine is in us and we are in Him. But, we are so indulged in this worldly affair that we are not even aware of His presence! We need not go anywhere in search of that eternal truth and bliss. We are inherently in it. What is needed is the awareness to shed this ignorance and join the true state we belong to!

Let us become aware of where we are!

7.       KANNADA COMMENTARY

5.       VACHANA IN ENGLISH

What is this darkness before the eyes?
What is this ignorance before the mind?
The inward  battlefield , the outward beautification!
What is this way that has been in use, Guhesvara?

6.       COMMENTARY

Allama Prabhu is wondering about the ways of the life of common man, in this Vachana!

We have eyes that allow us to see. Yet, there is darkness before the eyes. The darkness is the ignorance. The ignorance makes us evaluate the people, the scenery and the events we witness with our own measuring stick. We say how great this thing is or how better it could have been. We use this inference to take us to the heights of pleasure or depths of sorrow. We oscillate in this cycle of ups and downs. Do we ever question as to why we use this measuring stick? How did we acquire it? Is it necessary? This is the darkness in front of the eyes! Can we get out of judging people and events?

We all know that the mind is a monkey. It makes us to hop from one thing to the other constantly. We are happy with what we have for a moment and start desiring the next higher pleasure in the next moment. We are never satisfied or content with what is at present. This is the ignorance in front of the mind!

The mind is struggling with the ups and downs of desires. This is the battlefield inside. Yet, we try to project our happiness outwardly. We try to show off that all is well while the struggle is going on inside! This duality is our state of existence always!

Allama Prabhu questions ‘what is this way of life?” Do we ever get out of this mode of living and develop the awareness to make our inward and outward the same?

Let us see and think clearly!

KANNADA COMMENTARY
