Vachana 213: Citta Shuddavilladavaralli – Purity of Mind

ಚಿತ್ತ ಶುದ್ಧವಿಲ್ಲದವರಲ್ಲಿ ಮನ ಸಂಚಲ ನಿಲ್ಲದು

ಮನ ಸಂಚಲ ನಿಲ್ಲದವರಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಕರಿಗೊಳ್ಳದು

ಶಿವ ಧ್ಯಾನ  ಕರಿಗೊಳ್ಳದವನ ಮಾತು ಸೆಟೆ

ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರನರಿಯದ ಭ್ರಾಂತಿಯೋಗಿಗಳ ಮನ

ಬೇತಾಳದಂತೆ ಕಾಡುವುದು.

citta (mind)  shuddhavilladavaralli (of those whose -mind is-  polluted, is not pure) mana (mind) saMcala (wandering ) nilladu (does not stop)

mana (mind) saMcala (wandering)  nilladavaralli (of those whose –mind-  does not stop )

 shivadhyaana (devotion of Shiva, God) karigoLLadu  (does not  take shape)

shiva dhyaana (Devotion of Shiva)  karigoLLLadavana (those  in whom –devotion of Shiva- does not take shape) maatu (talk) seTe ( false)

guhEshavaranariyada (not understanding Guhesvara, God) bhraaMtiyOgigaLa (immersed in illusion) mana  (mind )

5.       VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Of those whose mind is polluted, the wandering (of mind) does not stop.

Of those whose mind does not stop wandering, devotion of Shiva (God) does not materialize.

The words of those in whom the devotion of Shiva has not materialized are false.

The mind of those immersed in illusion and not realizing (God) Guhesvara, will haunt them like a ghost!

6.       COMMENTARY

Allama Prabhu is emphasizing that the prerequisite to realizing the Divine is the purity of mind. We have said that the mind is a monkey jumping from branch to branch on the tree of desires.  The pollution of the mind is brought about by the six passions –  kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (attachment), madha (pride), matsarya (jealousy).  As long as our mind is polluted by these, the wandering does not end. As long as the wandering does not end, there is no room for the materialization of the devotion of  Shiva (Divine).  Worse yet, with the wandering mind one would be  under  the illusion of being a devotee of Shiva. Allama Prabhu says that the words of those individuals   who have not realized Shiva are never true and their mind haunts them like a ghost!

How can we develop the purity of mind? It has to come from within. It has to come from questioning the pursuit of material comforts and corresponding consequences. It has to come from the capability to distinguish between permanent bliss and instant gratification. The child is said to have born with a pure mind. The mind gets polluted through the experiences of the world. It is necessary then to become a child again. That is the purity of mind and that is the devotion of Shiva!

Let us strive for the purity of mind!

7.       KANNADA COMMENTARY

ಚಿತ್ತ ಶುದ್ಧವಿಲ್ಲದವರಲ್ಲಿ ಮನ ಸಂಚಲ ( ಚಲನೆ)  ನಿಲ್ಲದು

ಮನ ಸಂಚಲ ನಿಲ್ಲದವರಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಕರಿಗೊಳ್ಳದು (ಶಿವ ಧ್ಯಾನ  ಹುರಿಗೊಳ್ಳದು)

ಶಿವ ಧ್ಯಾನ  ಕರಿಗೊಳ್ಳದವನ ಮಾತು ಸೆಟೆ (ಸುಳ್ಳು, ಹುಸಿ)

ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರನರಿಯದ ಭ್ರಾಂತಿಯೋಗಿಗಳ ಮನ (ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರನರಿಯದೆ  ಭ್ರಮೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿದವರ ಮನಸ್ಸು)

ಬೇತಾಳದಂತೆ ಕಾಡುವುದು. (ಬೇತಾಳದಂತೆ ಕಾಡುವುದು)

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಮರು ಚಿತ್ತಶುದ್ದವಿಲ್ಲದವರ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಯಾವ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಚಿತ್ತಶುದ್ಧವಿಲ್ಲವರ ಮನಸ್ಸು  ಚಂಚಲವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಒಂದೆಡೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅನೇಕ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಿ ಅತ್ತಿತ್ತ ಹರಿದಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಏನೇ ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಾವುದರಿಂದಲೂ ಅದು ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ತೃಪ್ತವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.  ಈ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿ  ತನ್ನ ಇಷ್ಟ ಬಂದೆಡೆ ಓಡುವ ಮನಸ್ಸುಳ್ಳವರಲ್ಲಿ  ಶಿವನ ಧ್ಯಾನ  ಹುರಿಗೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಎಂದೂ ಗಟ್ಟಿಗೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಶಿವ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಹುರಿಗೊಳ್ಳಲು ಚಿತ್ತ ಶುದ್ಧವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಶಿವ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಹುರಿಗೊಳ್ಳದವನ ಮಾತು ಹುಸಿಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಆತನು ಅಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನು ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಏನು ಎಂಬ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನು ಭ್ರಾಂತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಂತಹವನನ್ನು ಆತನ ಅಶುದ್ಧ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಬೇತಾಳದಂತೆ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಮರು.

ಚಿತ್ತ ಶುದ್ಧವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದರೆ ಏನು? ಆಸೆ, ಅಸೂಯೆ, ಕೋಪ,  ಅಹಂಕಾರ ದಂತಹ ಭಾವನೆಗಳ ಆಗರವಾದ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಶುದ್ಧವಾಗಿರಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ.  ಈ ಭಾವನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಳಲಾಡಿ ಘಾಸಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನಸ್ಸು ಒಮ್ಮನದಿಂದ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ನೆನೆಯಲು ಬಾರದು. ಈ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಅವುಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಲು ಕಾರಣವೇನು, ಅದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವೇನಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಆಲೋಚಿಸಿ, ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಅವುಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂತಹ ಮನಸ್ಸು  ಶಿವನನ್ನು ನೆನೆಯಲು ಯೋಗ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.  ಚಿತ್ತ ಶುದ್ಧವಿಲ್ಲದವರು  ಭ್ರಾಂತಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರನ ಅರಿವಿನಿಂದ ವಂಚಿತರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಮನಸ್ಸೇ ಬೇತಾಳದಂತೆ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಯಾವುದರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ತೃಪ್ತಿಯಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೈಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಸುಖವೆಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾರಿಹೋಗುವುದೋ ಎಂಬ ಭಯದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಬದುಕು ಕಳೆದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ.
