enagoMdu liMga ( a Linga for me)  ninagoMdu liMga (a Linga for you)
manegoMdu liMgavaayittu. (there is a Linga for a every house)
hOyittalla bhakti jalava kUDi! (devotion  got washed away in the water)
mana muTTada liMga (the Linga which cannot be touched by the subtle mind)  uLi muTTaballude guhEshvaraa? (can that be touched by the chisel?)

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

A Linga (icon) for me, a Linga for you,
There is a Linga for each house.
Alas! The devotion got washed away in the water!
The Linga which cannot be touched by the subtle mind, can that be touched by the chisel, Lord Guhesvara?

COMMENTARY

In this simple yet powerful Vachana Allama Prabhu wonders how we have forgotten the true utility of the Linga (icon) and immersed in our rituals. He questions as to how the Linga can be touched (i.e. God can be realized) by an instrument like chisel (that makes the icon) while He is beyond the reach of even the subtle mind?

Sharanas offered Ishtalinga as a dynamic icon that be worn on the body and is available for worship and meditation by the devotee when and where he/she is. Thus, there is one Linga for me, one for you and one for everyone who wishes to have one.  Devotees started installing Lingas in their houses and temples. These static (Sthavara) Lingas appeared all over – homes and temples.  We started washing these Lingas in water, milk and honey; started offering them flowers and food; we started enjoying these rituals with the company of friends and relatives. It seemed as though the larger the crowd the deeper our devotion.  Being consumed in this ritualistic activity, we forgot that the icon was simply to get us started in the spiritual path. We need to go past the icon, develop the calm and clean mind to become aware of the divine and the subtle Self.  Allama Prabhu reminds us that the divine is beyond the reach of our minds and logic. He questions how an icon built out of a chisel be that divine. The gist of this Vachana then is that we cannot reach Him through this external, ritualistic worship. What is needed is the journey inwards, with an intense desire, awareness and discipline to reach Him within!

Let us go past the icon worship!

There is darkness on the mind that is thinking, Sir!
The so called darkness is near, on this side, Sir!
Lord Guhesvara is far, on the other side, Sir!

COMMENTARY

Sharanas provided Ishtalinga or Linga as an icon representing Pranalinga or Atmalinga, the God within.  It was said that one should hold the Linga on the palm of the hand, raise it to the level of the eyes, set the sight on it and meditate upon Him. This icon was just to initiate the spiritual path.  Sharanas insisted that the devotee has to go past the icon to develop an awareness of the God within and to realize the Self.  Allama Prabhu, in this Vachana stresses that just these ritualistic and mechanical means will not bring us to the realization of God. We need to go beyond the icon worship and become aware of the true nature of the divine, who is beyond the limits of our senses and mind.
The Vachana says that the hand holding Linga, the eyes that have set the sight on the Linga, and the mind that is thinking about Him are all in darkness, meaning that one is ignorant if he or she thinks that God can be realized through our senses and mind.  He is way beyond these. He is far away from this darkness. The true awareness of the divine and the spiritual inward journey is what is needed to reach Him.
Let us journey towards the light within!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

In this world people are making just good deeds into a prestige!
There is ghee (clarified butter) in the body of the cow!
That very cow does not know how to nourish with it!
Convincing (petting) the cow, extracting milk, heating it and making curds,
Churning the curds to extract the butter,
From that butter making ghee by heating it and feeding it to the cow,
Day by day, the cow can only be well nourished, it cannot be avoided, Sir!
Along the same lines, one gains knowledge by serving God.
The knowledge gained will become complete knowledge,
The complete knowledge turns the breath (life itself) into God, this cannot be avoided without a doubt, Sir!
Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhuve!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Siddalinga Yathigalu laments on how we fail to recognize what we have and are capable of while being drowned in the activities of mundane life. He says all it takes is for us to surrender to God, which brings knowledge to us, and the knowledge develops into complete knowledge and the complete knowledge merges us with God!

The Vachana uses an interesting simile to drive home its point. The cow has within it the major ingredient to make Ghee; (clarified butter), it does not know how to utilize it to be nourished. If we pet the cow, extract milk from it, heat the milk to make it into curds, churn the curds to extract butter and finally heat the butter to make the ghee, and feed it to the cow, there is no doubt that the cow will be well nourished. The cow had the basic element within it. This element had to go through a long refinement process to make it suitable to nourish the cow.

Along the same lines, we have what it takes to reach the God within us. We just have to find it, refine it and use it to reach Him. That basic element is simply the act of surrendering to Him and serving Him. This surrender and service will impart us the knowledge, the knowledge turns complete as we progress in our surrendered service. With the complete knowledge of Him we enter His kingdom and become one with Him.

The Vachana says that people of the world are simply not recognizing this inherent component within them. They are busy performing the so called ‘good deeds’; the good deeds as prescribed by the society to bring them prestige. These good deeds make them feel that they are serving the society and are contributing to it. But, they do not realize that all these deeds are simply boosting their ego.

The Vachana urges us to go beyond just performing good deeds and being within this mundane world. It urges us to recognize our inherent potential to be of service to mankind and eventually become one with God!

Let us push ourselves to gain that ultimate knowledge!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

The inwardly knowledge,
If combined with outwardly good deeds and pious living,
that is said to be unity, Sir!
If asked how?
The fire is burning outside, Sir!
There is water in the pot,
With the potential of the flame of the fire,
The way the water in the pot becomes hot,
In the same way,
If good deeds are practiced with the inward knowledge,
The life (breath) itself becoming God will not be stopped (is certain)!
Mahaalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhuve!

COMMENTARY

In our previous postings we have said that the goal of life is to merge with God, to achieve linga-anga saamarasya and to realize the Self. We have said that what we need to achieve this is an intense desire to gain the knowledge and develop the awareness of the God within. We have also said that a prerequisite for this spiritual journey is minimizing our desires, not over indulging in our sense, and be aware of the illusory nature of the mundane life. With all this, one could infer that once the knowledge is gained and the awareness sets in, we can get away from the mundane world and concentrate on God and enjoy the awareness within. Siddalinga Yathigalu wakes us up through this Vachana urging us to complement our inward knowledge with outward good deeds and pious living. He says that it is not good enough to acquire the knowledge and get away from the world we live in; we must contribute to this world through our good deeds. Only then we can become Him! The Vachana goes a bit further and says that when knowledge is combined with good deeds, no one can stop the human from becoming the God!

The Vachana uses a simple but interesting simile to drive home this point. The knowledge is compared to the fire and the outward world is compared to water within a pot. The water can only be boiled when the fire is brought in contact with the pot. In the absence of the two aspects not coming together, the water does not boil!

Let us be aware, pious and active!
