Debate (argument) is power of intellect, Debate is power of habit!
Greatness is result of good deeds, Greatness is power of accomplishments!
Awareness is power of knowledge; Awareness is power of the company of noblemen!
Awareness is outwardly symbol of THAT (God)!
Inwardly Awareness is physiological THAT!

There is no essence in Debating; there is no essence in achieving Greatness!
Awareness of Linga (God) alone is of the essence! KapilaSiddaMallikarjuna!
COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara  comments on how certain aspects we place high importance to in our lives, come in the way of achieving true awareness i.e. self -awareness or realization of the God within. Most of us enjoy debates and arguments. We try to impress on others of our knowledge and acumen through debating. Indeed the knowledge acquired through reading, observation and through others helps us in being good debaters.  Success in debating makes us start thinking that ‘we know it all’ and ‘we are superior to others’, essentially enhancing our ego. Winning in debates becomes habitual. This habit lets us concentrate more on winning debates and stops us from enhancing and sharpening our knowledge and awareness. Our knowledge thus stays superficial.

Along the same lines, greatness is achieved by good conduct and good deeds. Greatness could be due to the inherent good nature of the individuals or due to the untiring efforts of the individual. In general, everyone can achieve greatness through constant efforts, being in the company of noblemen and through the inherent interest in being a good citizen of the community. But, greatness does not imply awareness.
Awareness is the result of questioning the knowledge acquired. It requires a sincere observation and analysis of what is observed and learnt, through all the sources including the company of noblemen.  Such questioning has to be the result of an intense desire and effort on the part of the individual to explore within and internalize all the subtle aspects. Once realized, this awareness is ever expanding and subtle. It traverses from gross to subtle to soul. As Siddarameswara says, the only true awareness is the one of realizing the Lord within.

Let us sharpen our questioning to take us inwards!

Only Lord Kudalasangama knows the known, forgotten mind!

COMMENTARY

Basavanna is wondering about the nature of the human mind in this Vachana.  The mind is aware of and knows a multitude of things. But it behaves as though it is not aware of them on occasions. For instance, it is aware that one should not lie, or one should control anger. But, when the occasion arises, it forgets these concepts and behaves as though it is not aware of them.  Along the same lines, it does not forget what needs to be forgotten. For instance, we might have ill feelings about an individual and will have made all efforts to forget them. But, on occasion (say, when we see the individual) the feelings reappear as though we have not made any efforts to forget them. Basavanna questions as to why the mind behaves in this manner. This happens when the knowledge we have is superficial and has not sunk to our heart. Such knowledge is of no use. He says only Lord Kudalasangama knows the known and forgotten mind, implying that one has to be at the level of the Lord to understand the behavior of the mind. The knowledge we acquire should be internalized  and felt in our hearts. When we reach that level we become one with Him. Only then, there will not be a distinction between our thoughts and actions. Only then we will be in tune with Him.

Let us internalize the knowledge we aquire so our thoughts and conduct are unified!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Basavanna outlines the sequence of events leading to the merger with God.  Earth is essential for growing anything. Devotion is the Earth here. Just the devotion and intense desire is not enough to be successful in spiritual path. A Guru (teacher) is needed to lead the devotee in the right direction and hence the Guru is the seed. Guru puts the seed of God mindedness into the devotee. The seed sprouts and results in the leaf called Linga (God), meaning that the Guru has successfully implanted the devotee with God mindedness. Then the devotee must develop deep thinking and contemplation (flower) and corresponding right behavior (fruit).  The actions of the devotee should be guided by his deep contemplation on God and not be just ritualistic.  Once the fruit ripens, meaning that the devotee has reached the mature level of being one with God, he will be just about to release himself from the tree of material life and the God will pick him up, meaning that the devotee merges with the God.

The spiritual path thus consists of intense devotion guided by the Guru, resulting contemplation and thinking and the corresponding right behavior, which when matures turns into the merger with God.

Let our actions follow deep thinking and contemplation!

It is like the love of a wife worrying that her husband has grown weak, without serving him food when he comes in hungry!
She is not aware of what has come her way, She cannot spend what she has!
Like an actor crying for not real suffering! Kudalasangamadeva!

 COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Basavanna comments on how common devotees do not understand the opportunity they have been provided to be true devotees, do not acquire the knowledge needed to be a true devotee and cultivate it to be one. These individuals just pretend to be devotees while questioning as to why the Lord has not reached them.
Sharanas equated the relation between the devotee and God to that between the husband and wife. They said sharana sati (devotee is wife) and Linga pati (God is husband). The love between husband and wife must be pure, serene and unpretentious. Their relation must be one of understanding each other and appreciating the precious gift each has been endowed with.
Basavanna says that the wife who does not make any effort to understand the needs of her husband and does not try to  provide the necessary support for him, yet complains that he has grown weak, is simply pretending that she loves him. She does not know what she has. She does not know how to use the precious gift she has been endowed with. All she does is complain that something went wrong in spite of her love and support.  She is like an actor who is crying for an assumed suffering!
Basavanna implies that a devotee should understand the precious opportunity he has been provided to be capable of reaching Him; he should acquire and enhance the knowledge to stay on the spiritual path and achieve the union with God (Linga-Anga Saamarasya). Anything short of that is just pretending. Such pretension and ritualistic devotion is not useful.

Let us appreciate what we have and strive to use it be one with Him

Oh, You! Live by worshipping the great giver Lord Kudalasangama, do not consider this body as the truth!

COMMENTARY

This simple yet powerful Vachana from Basavanna illustrates the nature of the whole human race. Our body and life is compared to a water bubble. We do not know when it bursts. Yet, we surround that with an iron frame. The iron frame is all the materialistic activities we conduct and objects we acquire. This iron frame cannot prevent the bubble from bursting, although the frame remains intact. Basavanna is suggesting not considering the body as the truth, but lead a life of surrender to the great giver, the Lord.

Indeed, we spend all our time and efforts to acquire wealth to support our bodies and satisfy our senses. Acquisition of a house leads to the desire to acquire a larger one. This race to satisfy continues for ever. It is not wrong to be in this race. In fact, it is necessary for our survival in this world. But, we need to reach a level of satisfaction on our own and turn inwards to find Him within us.

Basavanna is calling the Lord, the great giver. He is the one who own everything. What all we have is His. As such, it is obvious that we need to invite Him into our lives. This invitation is not through ritualistic worshipping. The worship Basavanna is calling for is the Linga-Anga Saamarasya or being one with Him.
Essentially, Basavanna is advocating realizing the impermanence of material world and developing the God mindedness and realizing the Self as the best mode of living!

Let us turn inwards at the earliest moment!

KANNADA COMMENTARY
