VACHANA IN ENGLISH

What good is drinking spring water, if the contamination of the birth is not washed?
What good is drinking water from a forest stream, if the senses troubling the self, are not rid off?
What good is forsaking onion and drumsticks, if the ego of the world as strong as steel is not broken and the bad odor of illusion are not abandoned?
What good is consuming insipid food (without salt and spices), if the attachment to woman (man) is not abandoned?
What kind of virtue is that? What kind of religious vow is that?
When the whole body becomes Linga (Divine), the mind forms a bond with the awareness,
With all the ill will and characters destroyed,
And the truth and good will established,
I bow to the virtue of such a true devotee,
Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhu!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Thontada Siddalinga Swamigalu comments on rituals and practices the individuals go through hoping to realize the Self and reach the Divine. People shave their head off, wear saffron robes, visit all holy places, and stay silent for long intervals, and so on. The Vachana says that such outward practices are not of any use in achieving the Self. What is needed is reaching one’s own interior. Looking inward and cultivating the awareness of the nature of the Divine is the only way to reach Him.
The practice of drinking only the pure water from the spring and believing that its purity and sacredness will take one to the Divine is of no value. What adds value to one’s life is getting rid of the contamination of the multiple births and all the activities (karma) leading to it.
Drinking water from the stream in the forest believing that the uncontaminated water makes one pure is of no use. What is of use is getting rid of the influence of the senses. The senses need not be curbed, neither they should be over indulged; they should be utilized just right!
What good is giving up onions (pungent) and drumsticks (considered low value vegetable) and such and consuming the so called saathvik (mild) food believing that this practice will take us to the Divine? What is needed is getting rid of ego of this mundane world, becoming free from the influences of illusion (Maaya) and not longing for the embrace of the woman (or man).
The Vachana questions as to what kind of rituals and practices are these and what religious rights are these, essentially saying that they are of no value.
The true devotee is the one who has understood and internalized the concept of the Divine and realized the awareness of the Self, who has given up all the ill will and characters and has centered himself in the true good will towards all. The author says that he bows to such true devotee.

Let us not be immersed in rituals and showy practices and achieve the union of the mind and awareness of the Divine!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH
When the snake bites the big toe,
the poison spreads to the whole body, you see!
When the Linga (the Divine) touches the body of the devotee,
that devotee’s whole body becoming Linga will not be avoided, you see!
To the true (unfragmented) devotee embracing Linga and being with the Divine,
how can the other desires bother him, Oh, fool?
Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhuve!

COMMENTARY
In this Vachana, Thontada Siddalinga Swamigalu is expressing how a true devotee who is completely one with the Divine is not bothered by any desire from this mundane world. He uses the simile of the poison spreading to the whole body of the one whose big toe is bitten by a snake. Being touched by the Divine, a devotee fills his whole body and mind with the divine and nothing else. He is completely taken by the divine and he is constantly in company of the divine. For such a complete, unfragmented and whole devotee the desires and vagaries of the mundane world are of no consequence. The devotee feels the divinity in himself. He has realized the Self.

The Vachana refers to Linga. As we have discussed earlier, Linga represents the icon of the Self provided by the Guru to the devotee, along with the knowledge of what it represents and how the devotee should strive to go beyond the icon and realize the self it represents. The Self thus realized is the Divine we are referring to above. When we stand in front of a mirror, what we see in the mirror is ourselves. We do not pay any attention to the mirror. The mirror just helped us to see ourselves. Along the same lines, the Linga is an icon. We should use it as a mirror to realize the Self.

The message of the Vachana then is that one should realize the Divine within. Once such realization occurs, the ups and downs of the world around are of no consequence. That is the pure bliss and equanimity we should strive for.

Let us invite and embrace the divine within us!
