tOTava (garden) bittidaru (planted) emmavaru, (our people, referring to the creators – Shiva and Shakti)  kaaha (protection)   koTTaru  (gave  - gaurded)  javanavaru (people of Yama the God of death – referring to Kaala or time, and karma, the mortal duties)
nityvallada (mortal, impermanent)  samsara (world)   vRuthaah (wasted) Oyittallaa! (went)
guhEshvaranikkida (given by Guheshvara)  kiccu (fire)  hottikkaluMTu  (is only to light) aTTuNalilla.(did not cook and eat)

VACHANA IN ENGLISH
Our people planted the garden; the God of death protected (constrained) it
The mortal world went waste!
The fire given by Guhesvara was used only to light, did not cook and eat.
COMMENTARY
This Vachana from Allama Prabhu reinforces the concepts portrayed by the last few Vachanas, as to how the inherent awareness is clouded by the mortal world.
Our people planted the garden. The people referred to are Shiva (Purusha) and Shakti (Maya, Prakruti). Shiva creates us and Shakti covers us with Maya. We are the plants in the garden.

The garden is constrained or protected by the God of death. We are forced to participate in activities of the mortal world. The death brings an end to the life of plants in this garden. These two aspects are termed karma (mortal influences and consequences) and kaala (the time). We get immersed in the ups and downs of life.  Our life goes to waste not realizing the impermanence of this world.
The fire (awareness) was given to us by Guhesvara (God). We utilized it to certain extent (just to light), but did not utilize it in preparing the grand meal and eating it. The grand meal here is the realization of the self.

Essentially, the illusion that Maya threw at us engulfed the fire or spark of awareness that was inherently in us and made us unaware of what we could have been!
Let us realize the potential inherent in us!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

All the knowledgeable elders living on this Earth,
Have turned crazy and wandering around, you see!
Having filled the vessel of snow with the material of pleasure,
Without any fear, they are preparing sweets, eating them,
And selling the same to others, you see!
Not finding the root which gives life, they are subjected to death,
All those who do not know Guhesvara are burden on this Earth!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Allama Prabhu wonders how we are so immersed in this mundane world that we ignore its impermanence. He says that the root of life is the knowledge of the divine and those without that knowledge and awareness are simply burden on the Earth.
All the knowledgeable elders (meaning those mature individuals considered to be full of knowledge) have become crazy with the worldly pleasures. They are wandering from one pleasure to the other. They have no intention to contain their desires, neither they are aware that all these pleasures are momentary. Once the current desire is satisfied, a new desire arises and the chain never ends. There is no permanent satisfaction.
The vessel made of snow has been filled with the pleasures of this world. It is being heated in an effort to prepare the most delicious sweets. People are not only enjoying them, they are selling the same to all the others. They have completely forgotten that the vessel will melt away any minute. These individuals have not found the root that gives life. They are destined to death.

The permanent bliss comes only from the knowledge and awareness of Guhesvara, meaning that inviting the divine into life is the only way for permanent living, the permanent bliss. Those who cannot know the divine are just burden on Earth.

Sharanas never advocated giving up the worldly ways. They believed in being here on Earth completely devoted to Kaayaka (unselfish duty) and Daasoha (service). They suggested containing the desire for more of the worldly pleasures while inviting the divine into life. Allama Prabhu is supporting these ideals in this Vachana saying that the knowledge of the divine is the permanent bliss.

Let us develop the awareness of Divine and invite Him into our lives!

COMMENTARY

We put our eyes to good use. We make every effort to see beautiful places, people and things. We enjoy them and talk about how beautiful they are and sometime even add color to our expression of what we saw.  Allama Prabhu says that all this is great, but the most important sight is within us. Have we made any effort to see our self? If we have not, according to Allama Prabhu, we are blind!

We put our ears to good use. We make every effort to hear musicians perform. We enjoy listening to good speakers. But, have we made an effort to hear ourselves? If not, we are deaf according to Allama Prabhu.

We are fond of talking about all the things we know and don’t know. We often are more interested in impressing the listener than paying attention to how deeply we have understood what we talk about. Allama Prabhu says that when we talk, we should talk about our true self. Our talk should reflect what we truly are. If not, we are dumb.

What is seeing our self, hearing our self and speaking of our true self?  It is essentially returning to our dwelling, to our own land and to our own form; returning to our true innate self. It is said that the soul is inherently pure. Our experiences and exposure to the ways of the world hide this purity and bliss that is within us. Seeing, hearing and speaking of our self is the process of rediscovering that purity and innocence.  It is returning to the child we once were. It is the spiritual journey to find Him within us. It is returning to our pure nature un-wavered by the influences of the mundane world.

Let us see, hear and speak truly!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

The thieves are continually searching in the forest for the owner  (God) of the supreme wealth (peace),
Not seeing that the light (awareness) has extinguished!
All the great people of food and drinks (in worldly pleasures), not knowing their own self,
Tired of ordinary pleasures,
are begging for intoxicating drinks (asking for more of the same)!
A well-read scholar, holding the head full of knowledge (holding bookish knowledge),
Drank the distorted spiritual blood (distracted from the true path), you see Guhesvara.

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Allama Prabhu uses very strong words to paint the picture of the human searching for the eternal bliss in the wrong places and by wrong means!
The forest is this mundane world. The thieves are people pretending as devotees. The supreme wealth is God, the Ultimate bliss. These people are going all around searching continually for the divine. The light has extinguished, meaning the knowledge or the concept that He is within and there is no need to look elsewhere has evaporated. They have not realized that without this light (knowledge) they are lost. They have not offered their body, mind and wealth trio to teacher, God and wandering ascetic (Guru, Linga, Jangama) trio. All these elders (great people) are still in to the worldly pleasures. They are fully intoxicated with the worldly desires and material lust. Yet, they are begging for more of the same. This is the state of the individuals who deem to reach Him, but does not know how, covered by the illusory mundane materials and comforts. Then, there are others who in search of spirituality enter the world of acquiring this knowledge through reading all the great books. They become experts in analyzing and discussing all aspects of spirituality. They get involved in debates and try to impress others with their bookish knowledge. They never adopt what they know to follow the spiritual path and reach the Divine. They are satisfied with their success in portraying themselves as the ones who have attained the true bliss. Allama Prabhu says that these individuals have drunk the distorted spiritual blood!

In summary, one has to go beyond the influences of this material world, conquer the desire for more in this materialistic world and turn inwards to seek Him within. Blindly reading and acquiring the book knowledge is not sufficient. The knowledge must be digested to make one turn inside to seek Him within.

Let us not search for Him in the wrong places and by the wrong methods!
