VACHANA IN ENGLISH

On seeing a spring, some say dig up a well!
They say that they provide the food, water and shelter!
If the green stops growing and the rain stops pouring,
How will they serve, Sir?  Raamanatha!

COMMENTARY

This is another simple, yet powerful Vachana by Devara Dasimayya impressing on us to remember that everything we have is given to us by the Divine. As such, there is no point in becoming too proud saying ‘I did this and I gave this’.

Just as they run across a spring, some people make arrangements to dig up a well. They build shelters by the well. They start inviting travelers to take rest in these shelters, provide them food and water. Immediately, they start spreading the word that ‘they did it’ with all the pride they can muster.  Eventually the service attitude goes away and what remains is the thirst for the fame and recognition by everyone of this great deed they are doing! Dasimayya questions “how will you serve the water if the well dries up because of no rain? How will you serve food if the crops stop growing?” These materials that form the basis of service are provided by Him. If they are not there, our capability to provide food and shelter to others withers away. In fact, if we reflect on any aspect of our life or any object we are using,  the fundamental components needed to create it comes from the nature.

This Vachana drives home two points. First, everything we have is His. We need to be thankful to all this blessing we have. Second, our giving should be to serve Him and returning His back to Him. It should not be for advertising that we are doing a great service to humanity. What the right hand gives, should not be known by the left hand! Giving must be for the sake of returning that we received and not for boosting our ego!

Let us return His to Him with our right hand and let the left hand not know it!

The desire for women ended
Ishvara (God), because of worshipping your lotus feet, you see! Raamanaatha.

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Devara Dasimayya describes the effect of establishing ones heart and soul in the Divine. Desire is the root cause of all our misery. When we acquire the object of our desire we scale the mountain of joy. We know that the joy could be temporary. Yet, we desire for more. The desire for more never ends. When we fail in acquiring the object of desire we sink to the bottom of the sea. We forget that this state is also not permanent. Setting ourselves in the Divine, takes us out of the ups and downs created by the desire.

We are all social beings. We enjoy the company of people and objects around us. We depend on them for our happiness. For our happiness and existence we are dependent on the books we read, the movies we see, the sports we are involved in, the friendships we have cultivated and our relations with father, mother, wife and husband, etc. Setting on the Divine gets us the freedom from these dependencies.

The eagerness to consume food slowed down. The food here refers to all the objects we consume to sustain our lives and grow. We are in a constant turmoil to satisfy our hunger. With the Divine blessing, we escape from this turmoil. Our eagerness vanishes and a peaceful pace sets in.

One of the basic instincts of humans is the attraction for the opposite sex. It has turned out to be one of the major weaknesses of the humans and has resulted in destruction of families and kingdoms.  Setting ones heart on the divine defeats this attraction.

The message of the Vachana is that once we realize the Divine and bow our head at His lotus feet and set our soul on Him, we get the freedom from the worldly desires and achieve the bliss.  All the above effects are due to surrendering to the lotus feet of the Divine. This surrender does not correspond to ritual, outward worship. It calls for realizing the Divine within through single minded, intense quest. Through this enquiry one realizes as to how the desires generate, what is their effect and how to overcome them. Along the same lines, one understands how the dependence leads to misery. The dependence is the result of the fear of losing something. Key to overcome dependence is the removal of the fear. This can only be done by the individual himself and not by others. Realization of the Divine erases the selfishness and allows one to see the Divine in everything and everyone around him. It erases the conflict of ‘me and them’ and ‘man and woman’ and brings equanimity. This is the true worship of the Divine.

Let us invite Him to be with us and relieve us of the mortal tentacles.

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

The food offered to a devotee is not prasaada, leftover food is not prasaada
That offered after asking one to come close is not prasaada
Having thought logically, if you embrace Yours (God)
That surely is prasaada, you see Ramanatha!

COMMENTARY

It is a common practice to cook food and offer it (Naivedya) to God as part of the worship. The food is then distributed to devotees who consume it with complete reverence, considering it ‘prasaada’ (blessing) from God. Devara Dasimayya says that such food is not prasaada. This food is actually a leftover after offering it to God. Such leftover food is not prasaada too. Even if the food is offered with utmost love by inviting one to come close and accept it, it is not prasaada. If one debates (thinks) logically and embraces Him, then it is truly prasaada.

The ingredients for the food we cook to offer to God are actually created by Him. We take His material and offer it back to Him in cooked form and accept the same as His blessing. We offer the food to devotees by inviting them very lovingly to come and accept our offering. We then consume the leftover with all the reverence as it is the blessing. We go through this circuitous path to take what was given to us by Him and does not even think about what we are going through. Dasimayya says that what is needed is the realization that everything we have is His. We already have His blessing and we do not need to convert it into anything else, but accept it with reverence.

Let us accept everything we have as His blessing and everything we do as His work!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

When the python called hunger comes and squeezes the stomach,
The poison spreads from toe to head!
If one knows to remove the poison by feeding the hunger,
He alone is the controller of the python on this earth, you see, Raamanatha!

COMMENTARY

This is an interesting but cryptic Vachana by Devara Dasimayya.
The hunger is compared to a python. The nature of the python is to squeeze its prey before consuming it. The python is not poisonous. Yet, Dasimayya says that the poison spreads from toe to head when python squeezes. The squeezing converts the hunger into poison. One way to escape from this poison is to make the python stop squeezing the stomach by feeding it. Dasimayya says that he alone who knows how to feed the hunger to remove the poison is the real controller of the python!

The hunger referred to here is the ‘desire’. When the desire is activated (squeezed) it becomes the poison that takes over the whole body, spreading from toe to head. Feeding the hunger corresponds to sublimating the desires. When this is done, the poison vanishes and the python of desires come under control. Note that the hunger is a natural aspect of the individual. Feeding the hunger excessively results in stomach ache and other ailments. Not feeding the hunger results in weakness, anger and other emotions. But when the stomach is fed just right, the body functions normally and efficiently. The lesson then is not to ignore the sense organs, not to involve them in excessive desires, but to use them appropriately for the function they are for. Only that individual who does not curb his desires, not excessively immersed in his desires, but sublimate them just enough, is the truly realized!

Let us not be taken by our desires!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH
Fire can only burn, but cannot move
Wind can only move, but cannot burn
Unless the fire joins the wind, it would not know how to move
This way, do people realize the mystery of action and knowledge, Ramanatha?
COMMENTARY
Devara Dasimayya stresses the importance of combining knowledge with action in this Vachana.
The fire can only burn. It cannot roam around by itself. The wind can only move around. It cannot burn anything. When the fire joins the wind, together they can roam and burn. Along the same lines, knowledge is important. Just the knowledge alone would not be of any use unless it is combined with action.  Action without knowledge leads to undesirable consequences. We must gain the appropriate knowledge as the prerequisite for the action we plan on. Just acquiring the knowledge is not sufficient – it should be put to use through appropriate action. Dasimayya laments how people do not realize the importance of combining the knowledge and action.
Let us act with knowledge!
