Vachana 118: Naanemba Ahamkaara – Ego

ನಾನೆಂಬ ಅಹಂಕಾರ ತೋರಿದಲ್ಲಿ
ಅಟಮಟ ಕುಟಿಲ ಕುಹಕವೆಂಬ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು,
ಆ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಲೊಡನೆ ಜ್ಞಾನಜ್ಯೋತಿ ಕೆಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು,
ಜ್ಞಾನಜ್ಯೋತಿ ಕೆಡಲೊಡನೆ ನಾ ಬಲ್ಲೆ ಬಲ್ಲಿದರೆಂಬ
ಅರುಹಿರಿಯರೆಲ್ಲರು ತಾಮಸಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾಗಿ ಸೀಮೆದಪ್ಪಿ ಕೆಟ್ಟರು ಕಾಣಾ ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರಾ.

TRANSLATION (WORDS)

naaneMba  (called  I )  ahaMkaara (the ego) tOridalli (when  dawns, emerges)

aTamaTa ( falsehood) kuTila (cunningness) kuhakaveMba (deceitfulness)  birugaaLi (storm of ) huTTittu,(took birth)

aa (that)  birugaaLi  (storm) huTTaloDane (soon after the birth of) j~ ~jaanajyOti (the light of knowledge) keTTittu,(died, extinguished)

j~jaanajyOti (the light of knowledge)  keDaloDane (soon after extinction of) naa balle (I know) ballidareMba (so called wise men)

aruhiriyarellaru (all the knowledgeable seniors)  taamasakkoLagaagi (engulfed by the darkness) sImedappi (went beyond the limit,   lost their self ) keTTaru ( ruined)  kaaNa guhEshvaraa.(you see Guheshvara)

TRANSLATION

When the ego called ‘I’ dawned,
the storm of falsehood, cunningness and deceitfulness took birth.
Soon after the birth of that storm, the light of knowledge extinguished.
Soon after the light of knowledge extinguished,
the so called wise men and knowledgeable elders engulfed by darkness were ruined beyond the limits, you see Guhesvara!

COMMENTARY

Allama Prabhu comments on the effects of ego in this Vachana. He says that as soon as the ego or ‘I-ness’ dawns, the storm of all the bad traits such as falsehood, cunningness and deceitfulness takes birth. This storm extinguishes the light of knowledge. This in turn will ruin even the most knowledgeable individuals beyond recoverable limits.

Containment of ego has been the message of several of our previous Vachanas. It is very common that success brings up the I-ness in humans. We start feeling that ‘I did it’, ‘it is mine’, ‘only I can do it’, ‘I don’t need anybody’, ‘I am superior ‘, so on. We forget that our success is really dependent on several individuals and entities around us. Not only we forget to acknowledge it, but we also start justifying whatever we say or do is right. We lie, become cunning and do not hesitate to deceive to maintain what we have and what we want. Essentially, we will have lost our ‘light of knowledge’. Without this light, we stride in darkness and reach the limits of no return.

Some argue that ego is needed to be successful. They probably mean that knowledge, confidence, training, hard work are needed to be successful. Once successful, an extreme effort to be aware of the success and the factors contributing to it is a must for the individual to not wander away in the darkened alleys created by the ego.

Let us make an all-out effort to curb the ‘I-ness’.

KANNADA COMMENTARY

ಇದು ಅಲ್ಲಮಪ್ರಭುಗಳ ವಚನ.  ಅವರು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ  ಅಹಂಕಾರದ  ಪರಿಣಾಮವೇನಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಯಾವಾಗ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಹಂಕಾರವು ತಲೆದೋರುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಆಗ ಅವನ ನಾಶವಾಯಿತೆಂದೇ ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕು. “ನಾನು” ಎಂಬ ಭಾವವು ಅನೇಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಜನ್ಮ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ.  ಅದರ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಅಸೀಮವಾದದ್ದು.

ಯಾವಾಗ “ನಾನು” ಎಂಬ ಭಾವ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಆಗ ಸುಳ್ಳು, ಮೋಸ, ವಂಚನೆಗಳೆಂಬ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಮರು.  “ನಾನು” ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸಲು ಮನಸ್ಸು ಅಸತ್ಯ, ಕಪಟತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅವಲಂಬಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. “ನಾನು ಈ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದುದು” “ಇದು ನನ್ನದು”  “ ನಾನೇ ಸರ್ವ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠನು” “ನನ್ನಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಉಂಟಾದದ್ದು” “ನನ್ನಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಸಂಪತ್ತು ಲಭ್ಯವಾದದ್ದು” ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಯಾಗಿ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಅಹಂಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಾಧನೆಗಳು ಕೇವಲ “ನನ್ನಿಂದ” ಅಥವಾ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಮೇಲುನೋಟಕ್ಕೆ “ನಾನು” ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ತೋರಿದರೂ ಅದಾವುದೂ ಇತರರ ಸಹಯೋಗವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಏನನ್ನೂ ಸಾಧಿಸಲಾಗದು.  ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ “ನಾನು” “ನನ್ನದು” “ನನ್ನಿಂದಲೇ” “ನಾನೇ” ಎಂಬುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅರ್ಥವೇ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಈ “ನಾನು” ಎಂಬುವುದು ಎಷ್ಟು ಬಲವಾದ ಭಾವನೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಅದರ ಸುಳಿಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕವನಿಗೆ ಬೇರೆ ಏನೂ ತೋರಿಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಅಹಂಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ  ತಾನೂ ಮೋಸಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಗಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಇತರರಿಗೂ ಮೋಸಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೇ ಅಲ್ಲಮರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: “ನಾನು” ತಲೆದೋರಿದರೆ ಕುಟಿಲತೆ, ಕುಹಕಗಳ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು. 

ಈ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿಗೆ  ಸಿಕ್ಕು ಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂಬ ಜ್ಯೋತಿ ಆರಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ  “ನಾನು” ಎಂಬ ಅಹಂಕಾರ  ದಿನೇ ದಿನೇ ಬೆಳೆದು ಹೆಮ್ಮರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.  ಅದರ ಪ್ರಾಬಲ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ, ಆ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿಗೆ, ಎದುರಾಗಿ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಜ್ಯೋತಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ನಂದಿಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬೆಳಕು ನಂದಿಹೋದಾಗ  “ನಾನು ಬಲ್ಲೆ. ಅವರು ಬಲ್ಲವರು” ಎಂಬಂತಹ ಅರುಹಿನ ಹಿರಿಯರೆಲ್ಲರು ತಾಮಸಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಂದರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ  ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬೆಳಕು ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೇವಲ ಅಹಂಕಾರ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಜವಾದ  “ನಾನು” ಎಂಬುದು ಯಾರು ಅಥವಾ ಏನು ಎಂಬುದು ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಮರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
