 VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Can there be a darkness in the house where there is light?
Can there be ignorance where there is Linga (God)?
There is no ignorance and hence there is no wavering of mind.
Your devotees will not fall for women, will not fall for money
being one with the great Linga (God)!
Mahalingaguru Shiva Siddheshvara Prabhuve!

 COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Thontada Siddalingesvara Swamigalu comments on how enlightened and aware the true devotees of the God are. Their awareness makes them one with God and keeps them away from worldly desires for women and wealth. They can distinguish between the impermanent pleasures of the mundane world and the permanent bliss of being one with God. The light of awareness drives away the darkness of ignorance. Just as the light in the house dives away the darkness, there cannot be any ignorance left once one realizes God. The Vachana refers to Linga as God. Linga is an icon of the Divine. Just wearing Linga or being in its presence is not sufficient. One should be completely aware of the Divine within that the Linga stands for. Once such awareness sets in and the ignorance goes away the mind does not waver anymore. The individual then becomes centered in the Self. The Vachana stresses that all true devotees are centered in their Self and be one with Him always.
We are always immersed in our mundane activities in this world. We hardly find time to think about the Divine. We completely forget Him when we succeed in all we do and acquire all the wealth that makes us happy. We fall from this height when things go wrong. Somehow the awareness of Divine sets in when we say “Oh God, why did you do this to me!”  The Vachana asks us to get out of this ignorance and become God minded. That is the way of Great devotees. That is the way to pure bliss!

Let us realize that pure state of bliss and stay there!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Sir! What can I call these people with false bodies covered with skin, thinking “ I am the body constituted by earth, water, fire, air and space”!
Not earth, not water, not fire, not air, not space, not the nature, not the soul,
The true devotee is only that one who has realized that beyond all these, the pure self! You see  Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhuve

COMMENTARY

The five basic elements (Earth, water, fire, air, space) constitute our  body. The body is a gift of God. We are fortunate to have received such a precious gift. It should certainly be cared for and maintained in its best form, because  it is the abode of the Divine, the pure self.  When we start thinking that this body is ours, we develop an attachment to it, we tend to use it as we please, we become proud of it and our ego grows. We forget the spark within that makes the body serve its purpose.
We must realize that this gift has to be returned to the giver when the time comes along. When  we  realize that this body is not ours and  we need to return it when asked for, we tend to maintain and preserve it. We do not develop an attachment to it and our ego stays contained.
The body merges into the elements it came from when we die. The soul (self) stays on and moves to another body. the self was there before the body came along and it will be there once the current body goes away.

In this Vachana Thontada Siddalinga Swamigalu highlights that a true devotee is the one who understands that the pure self is not bounded or limited by this body. It is beyond that and it is permanent. It was there before the body was formed as its housing and it continues to be there after the body dissipates into the elements as one dies. The Vachana laments as to what can we call the individuals who are so attached to their body and believe that they are just the body?
The message of the Vachana is that one has to realize that the self is beyond the constraints of this body. One is not body, but the pure self. The pure self is an integral part of the supreme and the divine.  It is within us and hence  ‘I am Him’.

Let us see be Divine in us!

Oh! Brothers, if you are saying that “I renounced gold, I renounced Women, I renounced land”, blinding people of this world from the truth and showing off, please listen!
Have you renounced in speech? Have you renounced in mind? Please tell me!
If the memory of these desires has completely ceased in mind and body, and the memory of God’s icon completely fills the heart and lives on, then I am convinced that you are truly renounced!
Just renouncing in speech and thinking about them in mind, brings you back into this material world and these desires will surely sting you, you see Sir!
Neither you have embraced the world, nor you have renounced it! What do I call such senseless people,  Oh! Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvaraprabhu?

COMMENTARY
In this Vachana, Thontada Soddalinga Swamigalu comments on the state of people who have not completely realized the Divine, but pretend to have by claiming that they have renounced all the worldly desires and belongings. Gold (indicative of wealth), women (the other sex – men for women, women for men) and land (indicative of all other possessions) cover all worldly aspects that we strive for, collect and make ourselves feel accomplished. Relinquishing the desires for these is considered appropriate step in the spiritual path of reaching Him. But, just claiming that these desires have been renounced, yet longing for them internally, is just showing off to the world and indeed blinding the people around. True renunciation is when even the smallest trace of these desires vanishes from the mind and body, and the soul is completely set on the image of the Divine within. Anything short of that will simply bring one back into this mundane world and all these desires attack back with their multiplied vigor. Such individuals are neither here in the mundane world, nor there with the Divine.
The Vachana stresses the importance of external and internal purity and maturity in thoughts, speech and action. Just  showing off externally through the speech is not enough, the mind and body should completely be pure and cultured from within, to be truly being with the Divine. Purity of the soul and BEING with the Divine is our natural state. This state has been altered by the worldly desires i.e. by our DOING. It is time to regain our natural state of permanent bliss.

Let us BE and not just DO!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH
The light of awareness emanated, filled the whole body,
The darkness of ignorance disappeared, the causative factors cut into pieces,
The head of the worldly pleasures torn,
The attack of the ten sense organs stopped,
The world of five gross elements resolved,
The fact that ‘Brahma is myself’  driven home,
The I-ness completely disappeared.
Such rare individual is the true devotee, you see Mahalingaguru Shiva Siddheshvaraprabhu.

COMMENTARY
In this Vachana, Thontada Siddalinga Swamigalu describes what happens when the awareness strikes   to make the individual into a true devotee (self-realized).
The awareness emanated and drenched the whole person, meaning that the awareness is complete and permanent. This removed the darkness of ignorance. Due to this awareness the causative factors of the creation are of no consequence. We have described the two prime causative factors of creation (purusha, the creator and the male form and prakriti, the illusion and the female form) in our earlier posts. The other causative factors are the five sense organs (gyanendriyas - eyes to see, ears to listen, nose to smell, tongue to taste, skin to feel), the five organs of action (karmendriyas - mouth to speak, hands to work, feet to walk, anus to excrete waste and sexual organs to reproduce) and the mind (manas). The first two together are the ten organs termed dashendriya.  When individual’s awareness sets in, the influence of all these organs is of no consequence. He/she will have utilized them appropriately and not over indulged in any. The pleasures and the sorrow of the mundane world do not sway him/her.   The fact that the individual and the creator are one and the same becomes obvious. The individual and the creator are one consciousness (Brahman). Then how does this conscious energy put on the appearance of material solidity.  In order to bridge the gulf between consciousness and apparently durable matter, ancient Indian sages postulated (or “divined”) that all physical things are constituted of five subtle elements  called Pancha-Mahabhutas – earth, fire, water, air, ether.  These are not the elements known in the conventional sense (e.g. “water” does not imply the water, and “earth” does not mean soil) but are actually subtle conditions which together create the perception of forms which can be sensed by the human mind.  The actual names of these five elements are Akasha (ether), Vayu (aeriality), Agni(fire), Apas(liquidity) and Prithvi(compaction). A true devotee realizes the constitution of this consciousness and completely gives up the ‘I-ness’. When one reaches that stage, he/she is the true self-realized, and a true devotee.

The Vachana is urging us to develop the keen awareness needed to realize that we belong to that single consciousness, be neither sense- starved  nor sense-obsessed, remove the duality of you and I, learn to be not swayed by the ups and downs of the world we must be part of and let our ego go away!
Let us be the consciousness!
