Vachana 111: Kateda Kalla Lingava Maadikottaatha – The Icon

ಕಟೆದ ಕಲ್ಲ ಲಿಂಗವ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಾತ  ಗುರುವೆಂಬರು;
ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಲ್ಲು ಕಲ್ಲೆಂಬೆಡೆ,  ಲಿಂಗವ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟ;

The one who tranformed the carved stone into a Linga is the Guru (Teacher).
The one who wore the Linga is the disciple.
The Guru who gave Linga, went away,  Is the stone he gave still a Linga?
Although a stone carved out stone is still a stone, he made it in to a Linga;
The Linga now is without worship; Linga without worship is a stone.
The Linga of the Guru who went away is penetrable (seen through),
Penetrating it shows no essence!
One catches a boat to cross a river.
After crossing, he leaves it and goes away!
The boat thus left is useful for others, but the Linga (after seen through) is not of any use, you see! KapilaSiddhaMallikaarjunaa.

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Sharana Siddarameswara clarifies the roles of Guru (Teacher), Sishya (Disciple) and Linga (the Icon). The role of Guru is to impart knowledge and awareness to his disciple. He transforms a mere stone into Linga (an Icon, Idol or any symbol) and offers it to the disciple, meaning that he has implanted the deep awareness in the disciple. For the disciple, wearing and worshipping the Linga means deepening the knowledge and awareness he just received into the light in his quest for self-realization or finding Him within. Any other type of external worshipping has no meaning.  After offering the Linga, the Guru moves on to other disciples. Once he moves away, if the disciple forgets the worship (i.e. sharpening his awareness) the Linga becomes a stone.  In fact, Siddarameswara implies that the Linga is not needed once the disciple attains awareness. As the icon of awareness the Linga has served its purpose. It is now just a stone. Siddarameswara is urging us to go beyond the symbology offered by the icon, the Linga or an Idol. He is asking us to get away from meaningless rituals and worshipping, instead develop a keen and deep awareness of the God within us and strive to reach the ultimate truth.

 The Vachana ends with a beautiful scenario. A boat is useful to cross a river. Once used, the traveler leaves it on the banks for the other travelers. The boat is useful for others. But, Siddarameswara says that the Linga is not of any use to others, meaning that the awareness is so personal – it is yours, and only yours!

Let us be disciples of the truest kind!

COMMENTARY

From this Vachana of Siddarameswara, it is apparent that even in the twelfth century, people celebrated festivals with lot of excitement and extravaganza. The extravagance has taken a much higher level now a days. We spend a lot of money and time on these festivals. We build bigger and bigger idols; our processions get larger and more elaborate; we block city streets to conduct these festivities; we fight to prove that our idol is bigger or more beautiful than other’s. We do all this in the name of God, but we forget Him completely. Siddarameswara says that these festivals have become a means of devouring sweet meets to keep our tongues satisfied. He questions if we ever celebrate festival of our birth. That means awareness of god should become the festival of our life to gain freedom from the cycle of life and death. He uses fairly harsh words in calling one a dense headed hauteur, if he/she just celebrates these festivals without becoming aware of the God.

The word ‘Kabbila’ means ‘hunter’. A hunter typically spends all his time in hunting animals. He boasts about how large or fierce an animal he killed. He feeds on the animals he hunts and does not think of anything else until the next day or the time his hunger propels him to hunt again. Siddrameswara compares people who simply celebrate festivals without becoming aware of God, to such hunters.

Celebrations and festivities are not wrong by any means. But, concentrating on the extravagance to show off what we have or what we can do; celebrating to prove one is superior to others; just following the rituals in the name of celebrating the God; etc. are not useful. What is most important is the awareness of God and striving to find Him within.

Let us always be aware of what we are celebrating!

COMMENTARY

In our previous postings we have mentioned that Sharanas did not believe in idol worship. They did not advocate that one must have a temple to worship. On the contrary, they suggested that one can worship from wherever one is. They provided the icon of Ishtalinga as a representative of the God within (Prana Linga) and suggested that one concentrates, contemplates, and meditates with the Ishtalinga serving as the focal point. They said the true worship is realization of the God within through purification of mind and knowledge of Him within. In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara reinforces the concept of true worship. He says that worshipping the God (His icon or idol) with water from the lake and flower from the tree is not true worship.  He admonishes saying that God is neither exhausted by Sunshine to shower Him with water, nor he is a libertine to decorate Him with flowers. According to him, a devotee who has purified his mind and has developed the true knowledge of the God within is a real worshipper; even a true God!

We can provide another context to this Vachana. Water and flowers are external materials we gather to worship an idol an external entity to us. We think this exhibition of offering these materials to the idol is the true worship. We follow this practice because we are exposed to such practices and we are inherently satisfied with it, or because we do not have time or need to question and explore what this practice means. Even Ishtalinga eventually became an object of worship in this mode and lost its true significance. The last lines of the Vachana bring us back from this practice, to start seeking inwards through purified mind and knowledge of Him.

Sharanas envisioned six stages (Shad Sthala) in the growth of a devotee to achieve linga-Anga Saamarasya or merger with Him: Bhakta (Intense devotion), Maheswara (Strong will and discipline), Prasadi (All grace), Pranalingi (Presence of ultimate soul in life breath), Sharana (total surrender), and Aikya (sublime union). Siddrameswara in this Vachana is indeed propelling us into this spiritual path!

Let us explore the meaning behind our rituals and become true worshippers!

Look at your body; it belongs to the five elements it is made of!
Look at you; you are made of life sources!
Look at your wealth; it belongs to Kubera, the God of wealth!
Look at your mind; it is wavering ever, never stable!
Look at your thoughts; they belong to Brahma, the creator!
If you say ‘I did it’, it is due to the embryonic energy source!
If you say ‘I know it’, it is due to the power of knowledge bestowed on you!
If you say ‘that knowledge is me’ (internalize it), it materializes in front of you!
If you say ‘I am the idol of bliss that materialized’, it will stand as witness!
Knowing the witness, yet saying that it is unknown makes you one with the Lord  Kapilasiddhamallikaarjuna!

COMMENTARY

We have said that the ultimate goal of the spiritual path is to be one with God. Sharanas have termed it linga-anga saamarasya or  achieving the null (bayalu, shoonya sampaadane). This is the ultimate state of self-realization. The prerequisite for achieving it is elimination of ego or I-ness. The journey through the spiritual path then is the process of turning our senses to inside from their constant preoccupation with the outside, the material world. In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara urges us to examine various aspects of our lives contributing to the I-ness. He says that although you pay immense attention to your body and feel that it is yours, it actually belongs to the five elements it is made of. It is not really yours.  Similarly, your ‘life’ (i.e. you) is a product of sources that gave you life. Your wealth belongs to Kubera, the God of wealth. Kubera is one among the eight guards of the universe, in charge of protecting natural resources from which the ‘wealth’ is made of. A natural calamity can wipe out these resources and hence the wealth. Only Kubera can protect it meaning that the nature is capable of reviving itself from any calamity, you are not. Hence the wealth does not belong to you.  You cannot control your wavering mind and your thoughts are gifts of the creator Brahma. You cannot say ‘I did it’ because the capability to do is from that omnipotent energy source. You cannot even say ‘I know’ because the knowledge is bestowed on you by the creator, it is not yours. Siddarameswara says that when the knowledge is internalized meaning that you start looking deeply inside, it materializes as a separate entity in front of you. If you further feel that the blissful entity that just materialized is within you, then that entity will serve as the witness for your merger with God. The prerequisite for the merger though is the intense feeling inside and the state of not knowing all that is known. This is the egoless state. This is the merger with Him!

Let us become sincere observers of our own self and the surroundings and achieve independence from it all!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara elaborates on five traits of humans brought about by the sense organs: mana (manas, mind), buddhi (intellect, reasoning part of mind), citta (conviction, state of mind, mindedness, emotive mind), ahankara (ego, the I-ness) and Jnana (knowledge). Mind is a monkey. It is subjected to being resolute or being in doubt, up or down, happy or sad, so on. Resolute mind decides to do something about which it may not know anything. It thinks of it that is not there now and tries to create it. Doubtful mind is a result of not knowing what there is, hesitation, wavering, sometimes thinking that it is there when it is not, and some other time thinking that it is not there when it is there.  Making the thoughts come true is intellect. Putting thoughts into action is conviction (citta). When thoughts are put into action or made to come true, the individual feels “I did it’.  Saying ‘I did it’ is ego. The state of mind where everything that is done or given is divine work is considered knowledge and renunciation. The Vachana uses the word Jnanavairaagya to describe this state. This is the ultimate state in which the individual is indifferent (Viragya) to the tag of jnani or knowledgeable. Awareness of not knowing that I know is the greatest knowledge and the state of liberation. Siddarameswara says that not knowing that I have realized (become aware, knowledgeable) i.e. becoming egoless is the greatest knowledge and the sign of liberation. The message of the Vachana is that we should be aware of the state of our mind, realize the subtleness of intellect and conviction, contain ego and progress in the spiritual path.

Let us become egoless by realizing the subtle states of our mind, intellect and conviction!

Scholarship is in the hands of he who practices it, Sir!
Ignorance is of everybody!
The one who distinguishes the knowledge from ignorance and knows the world, is indeed a great scholar, you see, Kapilasiddamallikarjuna!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara says that a true scholar is one who experiences the knowledge acquired through reading, and understands the world. Ignorance is an attribute of everyone. Scholarship is in the hands of those who practice it.

Very often, we read a book, recall the material from it and use it in our discussions and debates. We end up lecturing on the topics without truly understanding or internalizing the concepts read. We impress people and ourselves with our capability to present the material, while within us there would be an inadequacy or hesitation about the topics. This is because we will not have truly explored the material to understand it, experience it and internalize it. This inadequacy haunts us as a ghost.  A true scholar is one who experiences the knowledge and practices it.

Is it possible for us to experience everything we read and learn?  The experience need not be just personal. When our knowledge expands our heart and mind’s horizon to make us feel that we are all one and we are not separate, everyone’s experience becomes ours. Development of such fertile mind is true scholarship.

Knowledge has taken a different meaning in this day and age. We can ‘google’ and find out and use what we need, when we need it. We have lost the art of deepening our knowledge and understanding and have become a pancake generation, flat with no depth. Siddarameswara is urging us to get out of this ignorant mode and become true scholars.

The eleventh verse of Ishavasopanishad also addresses the issue of knowledge and ignorance thus:

Vidyaanchaavidyaancha yastadvedobhayam saha!
Avidyaya mrutyum teertvaa vidyaamrutamashnute!

Meaning:

Knowing the internals of knowledge and ignorance,
Crossing the death of ignorance, realizing the nectar of knowledge!

Some argue that true scholarship is understanding the self, and all other efforts to cultivate the knowledge necessary to be successful in this mundane world is equivalent to death. But, the fact remains that one must develop the skills and knowledge required survive in this world. What is needed then is a true balance of knowledge that allows us to be best in our materialistic duties (kaayaka) and the knowledge of the self. We cannot ignore this world. We cannot be completely immersed in this world. The true scholar experiences this world while explores the self.

Let us experience our knowledge through true understanding in our heart!
