TRANSLATION

Listen Oh Sirs! I am talking about mind, intellect, conviction, ego and knowledge which are said to be the traits of the five senses.
The mind is subjected to resolution (conviction) and doubt!
Thinking of that ‘which is not now’ is conviction, not knowing ‘that which is’ is doubt!
Making the thoughts come true is intellect, Sir!
Putting the thoughts into action is conviction, Sir!
Saying that ‘I did it’ is ego, Sir!
Considering all doing and giving as divine work, is renunciation and knowledge, Sir!
Awareness of not knowing that I know is the greatest knowledge and the state of liberation, you see Sir! Kapilasiddamallikarjuna!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara elaborates on five traits of humans brought about by the sense organs: mana (manas, mind), buddhi (intellect, reasoning part of mind), citta (conviction, state of mind, mindedness, emotive mind), ahankara (ego, the I-ness) and Jnana (knowledge). Mind is a monkey. It is subjected to being resolute or being in doubt, up or down, happy or sad, so on. Resolute mind decides to do something about which it may not know anything. It thinks of it that is not there now and tries to create it. Doubtful mind is a result of not knowing what there is, hesitation, wavering, sometimes thinking that it is there when it is not, and some other time thinking that it is not there when it is there.  Making the thoughts come true is intellect. Putting thoughts into action is conviction (citta). When thoughts are put into action or made to come true, the individual feels “I did it’.  Saying ‘I did it’ is ego. The state of mind where everything that is done or given is divine work is considered knowledge and renunciation. The Vachana uses the word Jnanavairaagya to describe this state. This is the ultimate state in which the individual is indifferent (Viragya) to the tag of jnani or knowledgeable. Awareness of not knowing that I know is the greatest knowledge and the state of liberation. Siddarameswara says that not knowing that I have realized (become aware, knowledgeable) i.e. becoming egoless is the greatest knowledge and the sign of liberation. The message of the Vachana is that we should be aware of the state of our mind, realize the subtleness of intellect and conviction, contain ego and progress in the spiritual path.

Let us become egoless by realizing the subtle states of our mind, intellect and conviction!

KANNADA COMMENTARY
