Vachana 204: Annavanikki – Giving food in alms

VACHANA IN KANNADA

ಅನ್ನವನಿಕ್ಕಿ ನನ್ನಿಯ ನುಡಿದು, ಅರವಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯನಿಕ್ಕಿ ಕೆರೆಯ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದರೆ,

ಮರಣದಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆ  ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಉಂಟಲ್ಲದೆ, ಶಿವನ ನಿಜವು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗದು.

ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರನನರಿದ  ಶರಣಂಗೆ ಆವ ಫಲವು ಇಲ್ಲ.

TRANSLATION (WORDS)

annavanikki (giving food in alms) nanniya nuDidu (saying truth), aravaTTigeyanikki (providing drinks for travelers)  kereya kaTTisidare ( by building lakes),

maraNadiMda mEle (after death)  svarga uMTallade (there is heaven) , shivana nijavu (finding the truth) saadhyavaagadu (will not be possible).

guhEshvarananarida (who knows Guheshvara) sharaNaMge (to the devotee) aava phalavu illa (will not have any fruit)

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

By giving food in alms, speaking truth and providing water to travelers by building lakes, may lead to heaven after death, but does not help realizing the Truth!

To the devotee who realizes Guheshvara, there is no fruit!

 COMMENTARY

We do good deeds, give out food in alms, speak only truth, build lakes to quench the thirst of travelers, etc. hoping that we will attain heaven after death. We also get lot of satisfaction and peace of mind through these deeds in this life. We always have the fruit of our actions on our mind either in this life or after death. Allama Prabhu says that one might even achieve the goal of heaven by these good deeds, but they do not help one in realizing the Truth (Divine). Further, a devotee who has realized the Divine does not long for any fruit of his deeds.

Performing good deeds, living a life of truth, helping the ones in need are commendable. The satisfaction derived from these and the feeling of being a contributor to the society are certainly worthwhile. Allama Prabhu is asking us to be more than this; he is asking us to gain the awareness of the Divine. Once such awareness sets in, the permanent bliss becomes the way of life and there will not be any need for transient desires for heaven here and after!  

Let us strive for the ultimate bliss while being good citizens here! 

KANNADA COMMENTARY

ಅನ್ನವನಿಕ್ಕಿ (ಅನ್ನ ದಾನವ ಮಾಡಿ) ನನ್ನಿಯ (ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ) ನುಡಿದು, ಅರವಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯನಿಕ್ಕಿ (ದಾರಿಹೋಕರಿಗೆ ಪಾನೀಯ ಕೊಡುವುದು) ಕೆರೆಯ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದರೆ,

ಮರಣದಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆ (ಮರಣವಾದ ಮೇಲೆ)  ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಉಂಟಲ್ಲದೆ, ಶಿವನ ನಿಜವು (ಆ ಪರತತ್ವ) ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗದು,.

ಗುಹೇಶ್ವರನನರಿದ  ಶರಣಂಗೆ ಆವ (ಯಾವ) ಫಲವು ಇಲ್ಲ.

ಇದು ಅಲ್ಲಮಪ್ರಭುಗಳ ವಚನ. ಈ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು, ಜನರಿಗೆ ಹಿತವಾದದ್ದು ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಂಬುವವರು ಅನೇಕರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅಂಥ ಕೆಲಸದಿಂದ ಏನು ಉಪಯೋಗವೆಂದು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಮಪ್ರಭುಗಳು.

ಅನ್ನವನಿಕ್ಕಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಅನ್ನದಾನವಮಾಡುವುದು, ಅನ್ನದಾನ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ದಾನವೆಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ನುಡಿಯುವುದು, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ನಡತೆ, ಅರವಟ್ಟಿಗೆಯನಿಕ್ಕುವುದು ಕೂಡ ಬಹು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪುಣ್ಯವೆಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಬಾಯಾರಿಬಂದ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಕರಿಗೆ ಪಾನೀಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಜನರ ಉಪಯೋಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕೆರೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸುವುದು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಬಹು  ದೊಡ್ಡ ಉಪಕಾರ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಪುಣ್ಯ  ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪುಣ್ಯವೆಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಫಲವೆಂದು ಅರ್ಥೈಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು.

ಎಂದರೆ ಈ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯಕವಾಗುವಂತಹ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಅದರ ಫಲ ದೊರಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಹಳ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಅದರ ಫಲ ಸತ್ತ ಮೇಲೂ ಕೆಲದಿನ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಂದರೆ ಸತ್ತ ಮೇಲೂ ಅನೇಕ ದಿನಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಆತನನ್ನು ನೆನೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಜನ. ಆದರೂ ಕೊನೆಗೊಂದು ದಿನ ಅದು ಅಂತ್ಯಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕೆಲಸಗಳು ಫಲದಾಸೆಯಿಂದ ಮಾಡುವಂತಹವು. ಅಥವಾ ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕೆಲಸಗಳು ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಆದರೆ ಸೀಮಿತವಾದ ಫಲ ಅಥವಾ  ಮನೋಸುಖ ಕೊಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕೆಲಸದ ಫಲ ಸಿಕ್ಕೇ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಫಲ ಸತ್ತ ಮೇಲೂ ಸ್ವರ್ಗದ ಸುಖ ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಸೀಮಿತ.  ಆ ಸುಖ ಸಿಕ್ಕಮೇಲೆ ತಾನು ಮಾಡುವ ಆ ಕೆಲಸ ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಾದಮೇಲೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಏನೂ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದರಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ ಎನ್ನುವಂತಿದೆ ಅಲ್ಲಮರ ವಚನ.  ಇಷ್ಟಾದರೂ ಶಿವನ  ನಿಜವಾದ ಅರಿವು ಆಗದಿದ್ದರೆ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ?

ಈ ವಿಶ್ವದ ಹಿಂದಿರುವ ತತ್ವವನ್ನು ಅರಿಯುವುದು ನಿಜವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ. ಅದನ್ನು ಅರಿತಾಗ  ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು, ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದು, ಉನ್ನತ, ನಿಮ್ನ, ಮೇಲು, ಕೀಳು, ನಾನು, ನೀನು, ಎಂಬಂತಹ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ  ಪರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಭಾವಗಳು ನಿರ್ನಾಮಗೊಂಡು ವಿಶ್ವಚೈತನ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಬೆರೆತು ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ.  ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಚೈತನ್ಯ. ಇಂತಹ ಅರಿವಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವ ಫಲವೂ ದೊರೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂತಹ ಅರಿವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಯಾವ ಫಲವನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವುದೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.
