ಆನೆಯನೇರಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಿರೇ ನೀವು

ಕುದುರೆಯನೇರಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಿರೇ ನೀವು

ಕುಂಕುಮ ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ ಪೂಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಿರೇ ಅಣ್ಣಾ!

ಸತ್ಯದ ನಿಲವನರಿಯದೆ ಹೋದಿರಲ್ಲಾ,

ಸದ್ಗುಣವೆಂಬ ಫಲವ ಬಿತ್ತದೆ  ಬೆಳೆಯದೆ ಹೋದಿರಲ್ಲಾ!

ಅಹಂಕಾರವೆಂಬ ಸದಮದಗಜವನೇರಿ, ವಿಧಿಗೆ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೋದಿರಲ್ಲಾ!

ನಮ್ಮ ಕೂಡಲ ಸಂಗಮದೇವನನರಿಯದೆ, ನರಕಕ್ಕೆ ಭಾಜನರಾದಿರಲ್ಲಾ!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Brothers, you went away strut on an elephant,
you went away mounted on a horse,
you went away smeared with Kumkuma (Red saffron) and perfume.
Alas! you went away ignorant of the Truth!
Alas! as you went away not sowing the seed of Virtue!
Mounted on the intoxicated elephant of your gigantic ego,
you became the toy of the fate!
Not knowing our Lord Kudalasangama, you succumbed to the hell!

COMMENTARY

Basavanna comments on the state of the individual who has drowned in his materialistic world and has forgotten all about truth and virtue. He rides high on an elephant (proud of being at the top position or status), mounted on the horse (being the fastest around), and is smeared with saffron and perfume (wears best outfits and expensive jewelry and perfume). But, he does not even try to gather the meaning of Truth; he is completely ignorant of Truth. His gigantic ego tells him that he is at the top of the world and pushes him to become the toy of the fate. He is so involved in the ups and downs of the day that he never finds time or develops an inclination to move towards an equanimous state. The ups and downs kick him around. Basavanna concludes the Vachana saying that the only solution to prevent succumbing to hell is to know Lord Kudalasangama.  The message then is that no matter how high a position one achieves or how wealthy one gets, containment of ego is a must. Understanding the Truth, sowing and growing the fruit of Virtue and realizing Him (the Self) is the ultimate permanent bliss. Everything else is a road to hell!

Let us go after the truth to reduce our Ego!

ಅರ್ಥ:

ಆನೆಯನೇರಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಿರೇ ನೀವು (ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹಿರಿಯ ಸ್ಥಾನ ಗಳಿಸಿದಿರಿ)

ಕುದುರೆಯನೇರಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಿರೇ ನೀವು (ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿದಿರಿ)

ಕುಂಕುಮ ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ ಹೂಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಿರೇ ಅಣ್ಣಾ! (ಅಲಂಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೆರೆದಿರಿ)

ಸತ್ಯದ ನಿಲವನರಿಯದೆ ಹೋದಿರಲ್ಲಾ,(ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅರಿಯದೆ ಹೋದಿರಿ)

ಸದ್ಗುಣವೆಂಬ ಫಲವ ಬಿತ್ತದೆ  ಬೆಳೆಯದೆ ಹೋದಿರಲ್ಲಾ! (ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸದ್ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಯದೆ ಹೋದಿರಿ)

ಅಹಂಕಾರವೆಂಬ ಸದಮದಗಜವನೇರಿ (ಅಹಂಕಾರದಿಂದ ಮದದ ಗಜವನ್ನು ಏರಿ ಹೋದಿರಿ)

ವಿಧಿಗೆ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೋದಿರಲ್ಲಾ! (ಹಣೆಬರಹದ ಕೈಗೊಂಬೆಯಾದಿರಿ)

ನಮ್ಮ ಕೂಡಲ ಸಂಗಮದೇವನರಿಯದೆ

ನರಕಕ್ಕೆ ಭಾಜನರಾದಿರಲ್ಲಾ! (ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮನನ್ನು ಅರಿಯದೆ ನರಕದಲ್ಲುಳಿದಿರಿ)

ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ

ರಾಜನಾಗಿ ಆನೆಯನ್ನೇರಿ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಿದರೂ, ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನೇರಿ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಿದರೂ, ಅಲಂಕಾರವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೆರೆದರೂ ಸಹ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅರಿಯದೆ ಹೋದರೆ ಯಾವ ಉಪಯೋಗವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು.

ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹಿರಿಯ ಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿ, ಆನೆಯ ಮೇಲೋ ಕುದುರೆಯ ಮೇಲೋ ಕುಳಿತು ಮೆರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಜನರು. ಇಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಬಹುದಾದರೆ ಹಿರಿಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಬೆಲೆಬಾಳುವ, ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತ ವಾಹನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಓಡಾಡಿ ಸಂತಸದಿಂದ ಬೀಗುತ್ತಾರೆ ಜನರು. ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಅಲಂಕಾರಗೊಂಡು  ಆಡಂಬರದಿಂದ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ . ಆದರೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ ವಿಷಯವಾದ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನೇ ಅರಿಯದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆಗೆ ಅಹಂಕಾರದಿಂದ  ಉಬ್ಬಿ ಬದುಕು ಕಳೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ತನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸದ್ಗುಣವೆಂಬ ಬೀಜವನ್ನು ಬಿತ್ತದೆ ಅದರ ಫಲವನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸದೆ, ಸತ್ಯದಿಂದ ವಂಚಿತರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.  ಅದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ಹಣೆಯ ಬರಹಕ್ಕೆ ತುತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಹಂಕಾರ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿದವನಲ್ಲಿ ಸದ್ಗುಣಗಳು ಕಾಣವು. ಅರಿಷಡ್ವರ್ಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ  ಯಾವುದೂ ಒಂದೇ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಂದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಉಳಿದ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಅಂದರೆ ಅಹಂಕಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಇತರ  ಗುಣಗಳೂ (ಕಾಮ,ಕ್ರೋಧ, ಲೋಭ,  ಮೋಹ, ಮತ್ಸರ)  ಬರುತ್ತವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಿಗೆ ತುತ್ತಾದ ಜೀವ ಸುಖದಿಂದಿರಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೆ?  ತನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನೇ ಸದ್ಗುಣವೆಂಬ ಬೀಜವನ್ನು ಬಿತ್ತಬೇಕು. ಹಾಗೆ ಮಾಡದಿದ್ದಾಗ  ಅರಿಷಡ್ವರ್ಗಗಳು  ಅಧಿಕಾರ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಹಾಗಾದಾಗ  ಹಣೆಬರಹದ ರಾಜ್ಯ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.  ಎಂದರೆ ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಕರ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಅನುಸಾರವಾಗಿ ಫಲವನ್ನನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎಂದರೆ ಸುಖ ದುಃಖಗಳ  ವಶದಲ್ಲಿರುತಾನೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ.  ನರಕಕ್ಕೆ ತುತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅರಿಯದೆ ಸುಖ ದುಃಖಗಳ ಪ್ರಭಾವದಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತನಾಗುವದಿಲ್ಲ,  ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನವರು.
