ಭಿತ್ತಿಯ ಮೇಲಣ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಬೊಂಬೆಯ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ

ಹೊತ್ತುವ ದೀಪವಿದ್ದಡೇನು, ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ ಬಿಡಿಸಬಲ್ಲುದೆ?

ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಹೀನನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಷ್ಟಲಿಂಗ ಇರುತಿರಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ದೃಷ್ಟವ ಬಲ್ಲನೆ?

ಭಕ್ತಿ ಹೀನಂಗೆ ನಿತ್ಯಾನಿತ್ಯವ ಹೇಳಲಿಕ್ಕೆ,

ನಿಶ್ಚಯಿಸಬಲ್ಲನೆ, ನಿಃಕಳಂಕ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಾ?

What if there is a lit lamp in the hands of the person in the picture on the wall -

Can it drive the darkness away?

What if there is the icon of the God on the hands of a person without faith –

Can he see the Divine (Truth)?

What if we explain the concept of the eternal and the transient to a person without devotion –

Can he understand, Nihkalanka Mallikarjuna?
 

COMMENTARY
 

In this Vachana, MoLigeya Marayya emphasizes that the single minded faith and devotion are  a must to attain that permanent bliss of reaching the Self, with a simple simile. Very many artists have painted pictures of the lit lamp in the palms of a person. The light from the lamp illuminates the face of the person and shows all the corresponding shades, as though the whole is real. The fact is that the lamp in the picture cannot brighten the room it is in. Along the same lines, one can have the Ishtalinga, the icon of the God with him. He might worship it with utmost attention following all the rituals. What is needed is a clear understanding of what the icon stands for and be able to see beyond the icon. Mere belief in the worship of the icon is not enough. Getting rid of the darkness of ignorance through perseverance to see the Truth is what is needed. A true devotee will have questioned the difference between the transient and the eternal and will have developed the strength to go for the eternal bliss. He will have a firm, unwavering, single frame of mind to be one with Him. 

Let us drive the ignorance away and be one with Him!

ಅರ್ಥ:
 

ಭಿತ್ತಿಯ(ಗೋಡೆಯ) ಮೇಲಣ (ಮೇಲಿನ) ಚಿತ್ರದ ಬೊಂಬೆಯ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ

ಹೊತ್ತುವ ದೀಪವಿದ್ದಡೇನು (ಉರಿಯುವ ದೀಪವಿದ್ದರೆ ಏನು ಲಾಭ), ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ ಬಿಡಿಸಬಲ್ಲುದೆ (ಅದು ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸುವುದೆ)?

ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಹೀನನಲ್ಲಿ (ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಇಲ್ಲದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ) ಇಷ್ಟಲಿಂಗ ಇರುತಿರಲಿಕ್ಕೆ (ಇಷ್ಟ ಲಿಂಗವಿರಲು), ದೃಷ್ಟವ ಬಲ್ಲನೆ(ಲಿಂಗದ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಲ್ಲನೆ)?

ಭಕ್ತಿ ಹೀನಂಗೆ (ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಲ್ಲದವನಿಗೆ) ನಿತ್ಯಾನಿತ್ಯವ ಹೇಳಲಿಕ್ಕೆ (ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಮತ್ತು ನಶ್ವರದ ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರೆ),

ನಿಶ್ಚಯಿಸಬಲ್ಲನೆ(ಅರಿಯಬಲ್ಲನೆ?), ನಿಃಕಳಂಕ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಾ?
 

ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ:
 

ಇದು ಮೋಳಿಗೆಮಾರಯ್ಯನವರ ವಚನ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಲಿಂಗಧರಿಸಿರುವವನ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಹೇಗೆ ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜಕ  ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಗೋಡೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೀಪ ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವ ಚಿತ್ರವಿದೆ. ಆ ಚಿತ್ರದ ದೀಪ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆದೋಡಿಸಬಹುದೆ?  ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು ಕೇವಲ ಗೊಂಬೆ. ಅದು ನಿಜವಾದದ್ದಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ದೂರ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ? ಅದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ, ಲಿಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಷ್ಠೆಯಿಲ್ಲದವನು ಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದು ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದೀಪದಂತೆ ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜಕ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೂ ಇದ್ದಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ದೀಪವೂ ಇದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಬೆಳಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ನಿಷ್ಠೆಯಿಲ್ಲದವನು ಲಿಂಗಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಆ ಪೂಜೆಗೆ ಬೆಲೆಯಿಲ್ಲ. ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಅಜ್ಞಾನದ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಅದು  ಓಡಿಸಲಾರದು.  ಪರವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಕುರುಹಾದ ಆ ಲಿಂಗದ ನಿಜವಾದ ರೂಪ ಆತನು ಕಾಣಲಾರನು. ಕುರುಹಿನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಇರುವ ಅರಿವನ್ನು ಅರಿಯಲು ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಮತ್ತು ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಪೂಜೆ  ಕೇವಲ ತೋರಿಕೆಯದು.  ನಿಜವಾದ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಶೂನ್ಯ. ಅದು ಜೀವವಿಲ್ಲದ ಚಿತ್ರವಿದ್ದಂತೆ. ಅಂತಹವನಿಗೆ ಯಾವುದು ನಿತ್ಯವಾದದ್ದು ಯಾವುದು ಅನಿತ್ಯವಾದದ್ದು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದರೆ ಆತನು ಅರಿಯಬಲ್ಲನೆ? ಇಲ್ಲವೆನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮಾರಯ್ಯನವರು. ಲಿಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಷ್ಠೆಯಿರುವುದು ಮುಖ್ಯ.
 

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಎಂದರೇನು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ. ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಭಕ್ತಿ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ  ಭಕ್ತಿ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳು ಮೌಢ್ಯದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ ಅದರಿಂದ ಹಾನಿಯೂ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೌಢ್ಯದಿಂದ ಮಾಡುವ ಭಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಆಗಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಮೂಢ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಾಗಲಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಕತ್ತಲೆಗೆ ತಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಶರಣರು  ಮೌಢ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಟುವಾಗಿ ಟೀಕಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ನಿಷ್ಠೆ ಎಂದರೇನು? ನಿಷ್ಠೆಗೆ ’ಇರುವಿಕೆ’ ’ಸ್ಥಿರತೆ’ ’ದೃಢತೆ’ ಎಂಬರ್ಥವೂ ಇವೆ. ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಅನೇಕ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಂತೆ ಅರ್ಥಾರ್ಥ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದು ಕಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ  ಈ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಅರ್ಥವೇನು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸೆ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ. ಮನಸ್ಸು ಸ್ಥಿರವಾಗಿ ಆ ’ಇರುವಿಕೆ’ ಯನ್ನು ಕಾಣಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುವುದೇ ನಿಷ್ಠೆಯೆನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಈ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಯಾವುದನ್ನೂ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಒಪ್ಪುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಒರೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿ ಅಪರಂಜಿಯನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
