VACHANA IN ENGLISH

The feeling of ‘I-ness’ can be offered, but not other things.
The things that were not offered can be offered, but not the ones that were offered.
Oh! Guhesvara, your devotees,
Realize the principle behind the world and offer the I-ness which was born later!

COMMENTARY

As part of our worship, we offer food, fruits, milk and other things to God. We then consume them as His ‘prasaada’ (grace or blessing). The things that we offer were not offered before, as we see it. As such, we can offer them. But, once offered, they become prasaada from Him and hence cannot be offered again. But, a close examination reveals that everything we have in this material world came from Him.  The food we prepare to offer Him for example, was prepared out of several ingredients. These ingredients were grown or manufactured by someone else. They in turn used the raw material created by Him. As such, we do not have anything of our own. Everything we have is His blessing and grace. Since they are already ‘prasaadas’ we cannot offer them back to Him. The only thing we have that is our own is the ego, the I-ness. Allama Prabhu in this Vachana says that we can only offer that ‘I-ness’ to Him and with His grace get rid of it. Allama Prabhu says that a true devotee realizes the divine power behind everything in this world and offers only that which was born later, the I-ness to Him.

Let us be humble, appreciate His grace and strive to be egoless!

 KANNADA COMMENTARY

  1. This is a great blog and every week a new vachana is updated with translation and meaning. I have never seen anything like this before. Thanks a lot for all the people who are working on this.
This vachana reminds me of the great sage Ramana Mahirshi who used to tell the same thing as ALLAMA PRABHU, that is to SURRENDER THE EGO.....

  2. The Satyanarayana puja is a classic example of bargaining with 'god'...if you don't do this, such and such will go wrong with you. Making God an entity to be feared and submitted into doing things that will fill the pockets of brahmins-maharaj.

The Shiva temple I visited with my grandmother was very different from the adorned Siva lingas that I see in today's temples. Sad...

Ego is hard to get rid off, perhaps constant manan-chintan मनन -चिंतन would help, but in today's world more excuses for not doing it rather than finding time to practice. Easier to donate to a temple and get your name on a plate and be contented that the seat in heaven is reserved,

The path to Him is so simple yet difficult to achieve-a paradox.

  3. Hmm...minimizing our desires. a tall order-so we cook nice things everyday-different things everyday, we take a different vacation spot, take photos of the people and places and then come home and talk about leaving the वासना , talk about merging after letting the ego go. Upon reading the post again, I said, a tall order to deliver.

Going to the first paragraph--we sing all the time तेरा तुजको अर्पण, and then sing in the second breath जो ध्ह्यावे सो पावे . Aren't we mindful of what we are singing?

We are in such a hurry to finish the prayers that we don't even bother to digest the meaning-, be reminded again and again. That's all it is, all these repetitions to remind us the meanings and here we keep searching for new things. Reinventing the wheel.
