COMMENTARY
Basavanna, in this popular Vachana stresses the importance of
persistence or constancy for a devotee to succeed in spiritual path.
Morality is the most important tool for a devotee’s success in
realizing the Self. Morality brings the calmness of mind, self-confidence and one
mindedness and helps in reaching the Self. Two important aspects of the
morality as stressed by the first two statements in the Vachana are not
aspiring for other’s wealth and other’s wife. Aspiring for these two is the clear
case of becoming the victim of desire. Desire is the root cause of all sorrow. Desires
when fulfilled make one high and when not fulfilled make one low. An individual
with such highs and lows cannot achieve anything. Basavanna’s use of the phrase ‘other’s wife’ should be interpreted as ‘other’s spouse – wife or husband’. Essentially, these belong to others. Aspiring for what belongs to others is foolishness and can only result in misery. A devotee must thus develop the persistence or constancy of mind to say that what belongs to others is not mine.
Finally, the devotee must be persistent enough to say that the prasaada is truth. We offer food and other material to God as part of our worship. We then consume that material as the sacred giving from Him. This returned material is ‘prasaada’ in general. Basavanna is extending the concept of prasaada to everything that we have, since everything we have is really a gift from Him. As such, an appreciation for what has been given to us and the constancy to say that everything we have is His prasaada is a must.
While the Vachana is addressed to a devotee, the concepts presented by it are equally applicable to all aspects of our lives. We must be persistent to achieve what we set out to achieve. Giving up is easy to do!
This is one of those vachanas that simply sticks in your mind. Perhaps, it is because of the simple repetition of the powerful word "Chhala". I have known this vachana from my childhood days, however, only after reading the commentary, I understand the meaning of "Chhala beku sharanage prasada ditavebma" we should accept gods' blessing with gratitude. Very nice commentary.
