VACHANA IN ENGLISH

He doesn’t have a form – why do you imagine and say He has a body?
Is that the way of the one who has experienced the Divine? No, Quit it oh! fool.
He doesn’t have any attachments – why do you say he has two wives?
For the one who doesn’t have two wives, why create the symbol of the world’s game of illusion?
He is the one without a name, He doesn’t have or need any support – can one  give a name and assign a boundary?
He is limitless (without boundaries), He doesn’t change – can one give him forms in one’s own imagination?
I can’t listen to the words of people who imagine and say He has  a wife, son and household, you see!
Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhuve!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Thontada Siddalinga Swamigalu wonders why we imagine all sorts of forms, activities, environment and boundaries for the God, while we know that He is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. He is formless. He does not depend on anyone nor does He seek any support. He cannot be confined to a boundary- he is everywhere. He does not have a family – He is the one and only.  But, we imagine Him to be in our form. We associate Him with wives and children just as we do. We say that He created this world and the illusion associated with it as  part of His game playing.  Siddalinga Swamigalu says that this is not the way of a true devotee, one who has experienced the Divine and one who has realized Him. Granted, it is easier to visualize the Divine to be in our form. But this visualization limits our ability to see beyond the icon. As we have mentioned in previous posts, we should  go  beyond the icon and realize Him through the journey to within.

Let us not be content with just seeing the Divine in our form!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Without gaining the awareness of the icon,
If one punishes the body and tires the mind, what is the use?
If sense organs are controlled, senses are imprisoned and the soul is made a prisoner,
It is deceiving the Self, you see!
Thus, if the body is punished on purpose,
It is like cutting the fresh living tree and spreading it in Sunshine!
Sir! Just by punishing the body, the polluted mind doesn’t become pure!
What shall I call these impudents who claim their cycle of birth and death has ended,
Without the polluted mind getting purified?
Oh, Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhuve!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Thontada Siddalinga Swamigalu is again emphasizing the importance of gaining awareness of the Divine and purifying the mind as the only way to realize Self. He stresses that no amount of rituals and excessive disciplining of the body and mind would take us to the divine and free us from the cycle of birth and death.
The Guru has provided us with an icon along with the knowledge of what it stands for and has directed us as to how see past the icon and realize what it stands for, and use it as a mirror to see the Self. In our efforts to do so, we become victims of various types of rituals and practices. We fast and put our body through lot of hardship, and exhaust (tire) our mind. We try to control our desires by controlling our sense organs and imprison our soul. It is very natural to have desires. However when we study the nature of these desires, understand how and what role they have on our mind, these desires become less and less and even stop naturally. The Vachana says that without this awareness it is like cutting a live tree and spreading it in the Sun. The exterior of the tree dries up, but the interior stays green. Our practices punish the body and tire the mind, but our awareness level still stays green and immature. The Vachana implores such routine practices and says that we can never escape from the cycle of birth and death (ups and downs of this mortal world) unless we gain the awareness of the Divine, i.e. travel within!

Let us not depend on just body and mind bending to reach the Divine!

VACHANA IN ENGLISH

What good is drinking spring water, if the contamination of the birth is not washed?
What good is drinking water from a forest stream, if the senses troubling the self, are not rid off?
What good is forsaking onion and drumsticks, if the ego of the world as strong as steel is not broken and the bad odor of illusion are not abandoned?
What good is consuming insipid food (without salt and spices), if the attachment to woman (man) is not abandoned?
What kind of virtue is that? What kind of religious vow is that?
When the whole body becomes Linga (Divine), the mind forms a bond with the awareness,
With all the ill will and characters destroyed,
And the truth and good will established,
I bow to the virtue of such a true devotee,
Mahalingaguru Shivasiddheshvara Prabhu!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Thontada Siddalinga Swamigalu comments on rituals and practices the individuals go through hoping to realize the Self and reach the Divine. People shave their head off, wear saffron robes, visit all holy places, and stay silent for long intervals, and so on. The Vachana says that such outward practices are not of any use in achieving the Self. What is needed is reaching one’s own interior. Looking inward and cultivating the awareness of the nature of the Divine is the only way to reach Him.
The practice of drinking only the pure water from the spring and believing that its purity and sacredness will take one to the Divine is of no value. What adds value to one’s life is getting rid of the contamination of the multiple births and all the activities (karma) leading to it.
Drinking water from the stream in the forest believing that the uncontaminated water makes one pure is of no use. What is of use is getting rid of the influence of the senses. The senses need not be curbed, neither they should be over indulged; they should be utilized just right!
What good is giving up onions (pungent) and drumsticks (considered low value vegetable) and such and consuming the so called saathvik (mild) food believing that this practice will take us to the Divine? What is needed is getting rid of ego of this mundane world, becoming free from the influences of illusion (Maaya) and not longing for the embrace of the woman (or man).
The Vachana questions as to what kind of rituals and practices are these and what religious rights are these, essentially saying that they are of no value.
The true devotee is the one who has understood and internalized the concept of the Divine and realized the awareness of the Self, who has given up all the ill will and characters and has centered himself in the true good will towards all. The author says that he bows to such true devotee.

Let us not be immersed in rituals and showy practices and achieve the union of the mind and awareness of the Divine!
