Vachana 136: Enendariyaru, Entendariyaru – The Roles we Play!

VACHANA IN KANNADA

ಏನೆಂದರಿಯರು ಎಂತೆಂದರಿಯರು
ಹಗರಣದ ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ ಜಗವೆಲ್ಲ ನೆರೆದು, ಗೊಂದಣಗೊಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಲ್ಲ!
ತ್ರಿಭಂಗಿಯ ತಿಂದು, ಅದು ತಲೆಗೇರಿ
ಗುರುವೆಂದರಿಯರು, ಲಿಂಗವೆಂದರಿಯರು, ಜಂಗಮವೆಂದರಿಯರು.
ಶಿವ ಶಿವಾ, ಮಾಯಾಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ ಮರುಳು ಜನರು,
ಮುಕ್ಕಣ್ಣನಿಕ್ಕಿದ ಛತ್ರದಲುಂಡು ಸೊಕ್ಕಿ,
ಸಲಹುವ ಕರ್ತನನರಿಯದವರಿಗಿನ್ನೆತ್ತಣ ಮುಕ್ತಿ, ನಿಜಗುರು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರ?

hagaraNada (of mask)  habbakke (for the festival) jagavella neredu (the whole world is gathered),
goMdaNagoLuttiddaralla (people are confused, are in chaos)!
tribhaMgiya (hemp, an intoxicating plant) tiMdu (eaten) , adu talegEri (getting a kick out of it)
guruveMdariyaru (don’t know who is a Guru) , liMgaveMdariyaru (don’t know what is a Linga)
jaMgamaveMdariyaru (don’t know who is Jangama),
shiva shivaa (Oh God), maayaajaaladalli (in the net of illusion) sikkida (cought) maruLu  janaru (mad people) ,
mukkaNNanikkida ( given by the three eyed Shiva, God)  CatradaluMDu (eating free of cost) sokki (have become head strong),
salahuva (the one who takes care) kartananariyadavariginnnettaNa mukti (How will they attain liberation? they who don’t know the creator),

 TRANSLATION (VACHANA IN ENGLISH)  
                             

They don’t know what this (world) is, they don’t know how it works,
The whole world gathered for this pretend festival, is confused and in chaos!
Getting a kick out of consuming the tri-modal (Guru, Linga, Jangama) hemp,
they don’t know who is Guru, they don’t know what is Linga, they don’t know who is Jangama!
Oh God, these mad people stuck in the net of illusion,
Eating the free food provided by the three eyed Shiva, have turned headstrong!
How will they attain liberation, they who don’t know the creator, the one who takes care of everyone,   Oh Nijaguru Svatantra Siddhalingeshvara?

 COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Svatantra Siddalingesvara laments on the ignorant state of humans stuck in the net of illusion, not realizing the true divine principle.   

They don’t know what this world and life is all about, and they never probe to find out what it is. They don’t know how the world works and are never curious to find it out. They are all participating in this pretend festival. Each one has assumed a role – man, woman, teacher, pupil, leader, worker, etc.  They simply dance to the role. None of these roles were present at birth; but, get attached as the life progresses. They simply follow the rules for the role, so routinely that they never question what they are doing and why. They live in complete ignorance.

They further get intoxicated by bringing Guru, Linga and Jangama into their vocabulary. They will never understand the meaning or significance of the Guru principle within them. They go on seeking and worshipping another human as their Guru. They will never realize the Linga (God) within them, but go on worshipping the icon Ishtalinga by offering water, flowers and food. They do not realize that Jangama is the one who has realized the divine principle and strives to lead others to realize it; rather go after following and worshipping the yellow-clad actors.

Siddalingesvara questions as to how these mad individuals who are stuck in the net of illusion, who have turned headstrong consuming the food provided by Him; does not know Him and does not know how He takes care of everyone, can attain liberation.

The Vachana essentially urges us to shed the costumes we are wearing and go beyond the roles we are playing and develop a keen desire to traverse the spiritual path and realize Him within each of us.

Let us go beyond the external materialistic roles we are in and turn to within!

 KANNADA COMMENTARY

ಅರ್ಥ:

ಏನೆಂದರಿಯರು (ಈ ಸಂಸಾರ ಏನೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯರು) ಎಂತೆಂದರಿಯರು (ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯರು)
ಹಗರಣದ (ವೇಷದ)  ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ ಜಗವೆಲ್ಲ ನೆರೆದು, (ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಜನರೆಲ್ಲ ಸೇರಿ)
ಗೊಂದಣಗೊಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಲ್ಲ! (ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಗಲಿಬಿಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿದ್ದಾರೆ)

ಮುಕ್ಕಣ್ಣನಿಕ್ಕಿದ (ಶಿವ, ದೇವರು ನೀಡಿದ್ದುದನ್ನು) ಛತ್ರದಲುಂಡು (ಬಿಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿಂದು) ಸೊಕ್ಕಿ, (ಸೊಕ್ಕಿ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ)
ಸಲಹುವ (ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಸಾಕುತ್ತಿರುವ) ಕರ್ತನನರಿಯದವರಿಗಿನ್ನೆತ್ತಣ ಮುಕ್ತಿ, (ದೇವರನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳದವರಿಗೆ ಇನ್ನು ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ?)ನಿಜಗುರು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರ?

 ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ:

ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಜನರು ಹೇಗೆ ಬದುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ? ಹೇಗೆ ಮಾಯಾ ಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ವಚನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರರು ಹೃದಯಂಗಮವಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಈ ಸಂಸಾರ ಎಂದರೆ ಏನು? ಅದನ್ನು ಉಂಟು ಮಾಡಿದವರು ಯಾರು?  ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ? ಮತ್ತು ಯಾಕೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ? ಇದು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾದ ವಿಷಯ. ಆದರೆ ಯಾರೂ ಇದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಗೋಜಿಗೂ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಈ ಜಗತ್ತೇ ಒಂದು ವೇಷಗಳ ಹಬ್ಬ. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ವೇಷದ ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ ನೆರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಯಾವ ಯಾವುದೋ ವೇಷ ಧರಿಸಿ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ. ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಪದವೀಧರ. ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬ ರೈತ. ಮಗದೊಬ್ಬ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ, ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಾದಿಗ ಮತೊಬ್ಬ ಹೊಲೆಯ. ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ. ಇನ್ನೂ ಏನೇನೋ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲವೂಗಳು ವಿವಿಧ ವೇಷಗಳೇ. ಈ ಯಾವುವೂ ಹುಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದವುಗಳಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲವೂಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ ಉಂಟಾದವು? ಆಯಾ ವೇಷದ ಸ್ಥಾನಮಾನವೇನು? ಅದರ ಇತಿಮಿತಿಗಳೇನು? ಎಂಬುದು ಜನರಿಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ. ವೇಷವನ್ನೇ ನಿಜವೆಂದು ನಂಬಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಲು ಹೆಣಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಗಲಿಬಿಲಿಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನೂರಾರು ವೇಷಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಗೊಂದಲಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು ಇದರಿಂದ, ಈ ಗೊಂದಲದಿಂದ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಗೊಳ್ಳಲು ಗುರು ಲಿಂಗ ಜಂಗಮರನ್ನು ಅವಲಂಬಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ವಿಷಾದದ ಸಂಗತಿಯೆಂದರೆ  ಅವರಿಗೆ ಗುರು ಲಿಂಗ ಜಂಗಮರ  ನಿಜವಾದ ಅರಿವಿಲ್ಲ. ಗುರುವೆಂದರೆ ಯಾರು? ಲಿಂಗವೆಂದರೆ ಏನು? ಜಂಗಮವೆಂದರೆ ಯಾರು? ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳದೆ  ಮಾಯಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅರಿವು ಎಂದರೇನು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಶುದ್ಧವಾದ ಜಿಜ್ಞಾನೆಸೆಯೇ ಗುರು ತತ್ವ. ಅದು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನಿಹಿತವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸದೆ, ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳದೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಯಾವುದೋ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಿಲ್ಲದಂತೆ ಪೂಜಿಸಿ ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಗುರುವೆಂಬ ಅಮಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೆರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಅದೇ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿ  ಲಿಂಗವು ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಕುರುಹು. ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನೇ ನಿಜವಾದ ದೇವರು ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿ ಅದರ ಬಾಹ್ಯ ಪೂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗುವುದು ಮೂರ್ಖತನ. ಆದರೆ ಜನರು ಮಾಡುವುದು ಇದನ್ನೇ. ಬಂಡಿ ಬಂಡಿ ಹೂವು ಪತ್ರೆಗಳಿಂದ ವೈಭವಯುಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದೂ ಕೂಡ ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ಅಮಲೇ.  
ಆ ಲಿಂಗತತ್ವವನ್ನು ಅರಿತು ಸ್ವತಃ ಲಿಂಗಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಅದರ ಮಾರ್ಗ ತೋರಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿದವನು ಜಂಗಮ. ಅದನ್ನು ಅರಿಯದೆ ವೇಷಧಾರಿ ಜಂಗಮರನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತ ಕಾಲ ಕಳೆಯುವವರನ್ನು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರು ಮಾಯಾಜಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿದವರು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಅವರು ಗುರು ಲಿಂಗ ಜಂಗಮವೆಂಬ ಮೂರು ರೀತಿಯ ಭಂಗಿಯನ್ನು ಕುಡಿದು ಮತ್ತೇರಿದವರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ಭಂಗಿಯನ್ನು ಕುಡಿದವನೇ ಮತ್ತೇರಿ ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿ ನಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ  ಇನ್ನು ಮೂರು ರೀತಿಯ ಭಂಗಿಯನ್ನು ಕುಡಿದವನ ಗತಿ ಏನಾಗ ಬೇಕು?
ಈ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದೆಲ್ಲ ಆ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ತನ ಕೊಡುಗೆ. ಆ ದೇವರ ಪ್ರಸಾದ. ಆತ ನೀಡಿದ ಪ್ರಸಾದವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸಾದವೆಂಬ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಜನರು.  ಆ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಕರ್ತನು ಕೊಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ಛತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಕೂಳಿನಂತೆ ತಿಂದು ಜನರು ಸೊಕ್ಕಿ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.  ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಸಾಕುತ್ತಿರುವವನನ್ನು ಅರಿಯದೆ ಇದ್ದವನಿಗೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗರು.
