ಅಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂಬ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಆವರಿಸಿತ್ತಯ್ಯ ಜಗವೆಲ್ಲವ

ಅಂಧಕಾರದ ಗುಹೆಯೊಳಗಿದ್ದವರಂತೆ ಇದ್ದರಯ್ಯ ಜೀವರೆಲ್ಲ
ಹೊಲಬುದಪ್ಪಿ ತಿಳಿವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕಳವಳಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಯ್ಯ ಅಡವಿಯ ಹೊಕ್ಕ ಶಿಶುವಿನಂತೆ
ನಿಜಗುರು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರಾ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕರುಣವಾಗದನ್ನಕ್ಕ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಯ್ಯ  ಹೊಲಬನರಿಯದೆ.

The darkness called ignorance has covered the entire world, Sir!

All beings are there as though living in the cave of darkness, Sir!
Have lost the way, not knowing and are worried, like a child entering a forest!
Nijaguru Svatantra Siddalingesvara, they are exhausted not knowing the way out, until your blessing comes through!

COMMENTARY

This Vachana from Thontada Siddalinga Sharanaru depicts the state of ignorance one lives in until the awareness and blessings of the Divine   set in.

The darkness called ignorance has covered the entire world. People are living in this cave of darkness. Caves are typically dark. But, the cave referred to here is the cave of darkness, meaning that the ignorance has completely taken the individual over. The individual has lost the way, is worried just like a child entering a dense forest. This state of ignorance, tiredness and exhaustion continues unless His blessing comes through and the awareness sets in.
The mundane world has given us all the comforts we sought. We are immersed in this world believing that this is the ultimate. We enjoy our successes. We forget that the failure shadows success, and the happiness and sorrow are the two faces of the coin. We enjoy successes. We go down to dumps when failure hits. The key to take success and failure with equal stride is a keen understanding and awareness of what is most important in life. His blessing comes through when we start questioning our state of living and develop the awareness of what is permanent and what is not, and strive towards the bliss that is within us, i.e.  the realization of the Self.

Let us move past the mundane, to the divine!

ಅರ್ಥ:

ಅಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂಬ  ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಆವರಿಸಿತ್ತಯ್ಯ ಜಗವೆಲ್ಲವ  (ಅಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂಬ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಈ ಜಗವನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಆವರಿಸಿದೆ)

ಅಂಧಕಾರದ (ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ)  ಗುಹೆಯೊಳಗಿದ್ದವರಂತೆ ಇದ್ದರಯ್ಯ ಜೀವರೆಲ್ಲ (ಜೀವರು ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ)
ಹೊಲಬುದಪ್ಪಿ (ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿ)  ತಿಳಿವಿಲ್ಲದೆ (ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ) ಕಳವಳಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಯ್ಯ (ಚಿಂತಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ)  ಅಡವಿಯ ಹೊಕ್ಕ ಶಿಶುವಿನಂತೆ  (ಅಡವಿಯೊಅಳ್ಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ  ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಕೊಂಡ  ಮಗಿವಿನಂತೆ)
ನಿಜಗುರು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರಾ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕರುಣವಾಗದನ್ನಕ್ಕ (ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕರುಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ)  ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಯ್ಯ (ಆಯಾಸಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ)  ಹೊಲಬನರಿಯದೆ (ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯದೆ).

ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ:

ಇದು ತೋಂಟದ ಸಿದ್ಧಲಿಂಗರ ವಚನ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸಂಸಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ನರಳುವವರು ಹೇಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಏಕೆ ಕೋಟಲೆಗೊಳಗಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 

ಈ ಜಗದ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಅಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂಬ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಆವರಿಸಿದೆ. ಆ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ,  ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ  ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯಂತೆ ಗಾಢವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲೇ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ ಗುಹೆಯಾಗಿರುವಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂತಹ ಗಾಢವಾದ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯಿರಬಹುದು? ಕೇವಲ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯೇ ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವರು  ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿ ಎತ್ತ ಹೋಗುವುದು ಎಂಬ ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಚಿಂತೆಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.  ಅವರ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ  ಶಿಶುವು ಹೇಗೋ ಅಡವಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಕ್ಕು ದಾರಿ ತಿಳಿಯದೆ ಏನೂ ಮಾಡಲರಿಯದೆ ಚಿಂತಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಂತಿದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದೇವರ ಕರುಣೆ ಈ ಜೀವರಿಗೆ ಉಂಟಾಗುವವರೆಗೂ ಅವರು ಇದೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. 

ಜೀವರು ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ಬೇಕು ಬೇಡಗಳ ಪಾಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕು ತೊಳಲಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತಾನೇ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಆಶೆಗಳ ಅಡವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕು  ಒದ್ದಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಕಾರಣ ಹೊರಬರಲು ದಾರಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಅಜ್ಞಾನದ ಕತ್ತಲೆ. ಆ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ದೇವರ ಕರುಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ದೂರಾಗಲಾರದು. ದೇವರ ಕರುಣೆಯಾಗುವವರೆಗೂ ಜೀವನು ಹಾಗೇ ಇರುತ್ತಾನೆ.  

ದೇವರ ಕರುಣೆಯಾಗುವವರೆಗೂ ಅಂದರೆ ಏನು ಅರ್ಥ?  

ಜೀವನು ಯಾವಾಗ , ತಾನು,  ಎಲ್ಲಿ, ಏಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೇಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಕೊಂಡುದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅರಿತಾಗ ಆ ಕರುಣೆಯುಂಟಾಗುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದೇ ದೇವರ ಕರುಣೆ ಅಥವಾ ಬೆಳಕು. ಆ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬೆಳಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗು ಕಾಯಬೇಕು.
