Pretending that God is thirsty, they offer food and water, Sir!
What kind of devotional relationship is this?
What kind of devotee relationship is this?
What kind of relationship with God is this?
If such superficial devotion is seen,
Lord Guhesvara rejects it!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Allama Prabhu urges us to shed our ignorance and reach the profound principle beyond the idols and icons we have created. We made the idol in our own image and said it is God. We assumed that God gets hungry when we are hungry and thirsty and started offering water and food to the idol. We decided to bathe the idol with water, milk and honey. We embraced all these rituals and believed that it is the true devotion. We believed that the way to be devotional is to exhibit all these rituals in public and private. Even the Ishtalinga suggested by Sharanas  as an icon to get us started, took the form of God for us and we stayed happy in bathing, decorating and offering food and water to it. We did not get past the rituals to develop the true devotion to connect with the omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent principle.  Allama Prabhu questions as to what kind of devotion is this? What kind of devotees are we and what kind of relationship with God we have developed? He says that lord Guhesvara simply rejects this kind of superficial devotion.

The idols and icons are just the initial media for us to develop the devotional attitude. We need to get past those, and realize the Self and the God within us and in everyone around us. Only then we are true devotees, and only that is the true devotion.

Let us learn to move beyond the rituals!

TRANSLATION (VACHANA IN ENGLISH)

On building a house in the deserted wilderness,
Alas! The forest fire erupted and engulfed!
While the house burnt in that fire,
Where did the master of the house go?
Finding that the house though burnt in that fire, but not destroyed,
The master of the house is wailing and tired!
Oh Guhesvara, finding that this place is without your love,
I got disgusted and left it, Sir!

COMMENTARY

In this cryptic Vachana, Allama Prabhu insists that life without God’s love is not worth living. He equates the man to a house built in wilderness. We are all surrounded by our fellow beings, but Allama Prabhu calls this environment deserted, because in practice each of us is on our own. We are immersed in our own materialistic pursuits, while we are in this forest of life and society. We create and face our own problems, while providing a façade of the social structure supporting one another.

The forest fire erupts by itself through the friction among the trees, so are the problems in society. They arise without one’s direct actions and doings. But, the individual suffers from them, just as the house burnt by the forest fires.
When the house is burning from the forest fire, where did the master of the house go? We are supposedly in charge of our lives and should be able to control and surmount all the problems that occur. But, we find ourselves to be lost.
We are lost, but not completely destroyed by these problems. We suffer and suffer – the master of the house is wailing and tired, while the house is burnt, but not destroyed!
The only way to overcome this sad state of life is to induce God’s love into it. Allama Prabhu says that he got disgusted to witness this house not drenched in God’s love, and left from there! He does not want any part of the society that does not invite God into it!

We are blessed with this beautiful body, mind and soul complex. We are wandering around in pursuit of materialistic perfection. In this rat race, we forget the provider, the profound within us. Only when we invite Him to be part of us, be our guide and the protector, we can make this world beautiful and fit. When His love drenches this wilderness, the lonliness and problems go away - the strength to face problems and the equanimity appear.

Let us find Him within and invite His love into our lives!

COMMENTARY

This Vachana from Sharana Jakkannayya, supplements our previous posting  on the vastness and effects of lose talk. In particular, it reflects on blame and gossip aspects of our conversations. This is the last posting on this topic for now.
We are all proud of ourselves. We feel we are perfect in all ways and do not expect anyone to comment on us.  But, the other’s may not feel that way and may even resort to commenting on us in our absence. We will eventually hear those comments from those who heard them. Our immediate reaction would be to start commenting on the individual who commented on us.  We might even mistreat the individual who passed on the gossip to us.  In fact, we should be sympathetic to the individual who blamed us behind our back, because he/she did not have the courage to say it to us directly. He is thus a weak individual, fallen for gossip about others and not aware of the consequence of his/her gossip. Trying to correct such individuals, getting upset with such blaming and trying to mistreat the individual who brings the gossip to us make us lesser of a human being, the ‘uncivilized’.  Jakkannayya asks us to ignore such gossips, they cannot be talked about and they cannot be heard. We all fall prey to gossiping.  We gossip intentionally, unintentionally and sometimes to raise the humor level in our conversations. We tend to get carried away. It is important to watch and control ourselves and what we speak.

We should similarly be tolerant of those who blame us directly. Any such blame should be considered an opportunity to reflect on ourselves and improve ourselves. The least we can do is ignore the blame and be civilized in handling the blamer.  It is very easy to get into conflicts and start the blame game. One wrong statement leads to the other, the gossip spreads and the scope of damage keeps increasing. Awareness of what our words lead to is thus a must.

In summary, there are three players in the blame game: the blamer (gossiper), the messenger, and the blamed. The blamed has the highest responsibility to ignore the blame and gossip and stay above taking the messenger to task. The messenger should understand the consequences of spreading the gossip and saty away from it. The blamer must watch his/her words and make sure they do not hurt others intentionally or unintentionally.

This vachana not only prompts us towards the best behavior in spite of the undesirable blame or gossip, It also urges us to make every effort to stop the gossip from spreading.  Jakkannayya uses a very severe simile saying that the gossip is worse than the stench of a dead dog; it must be stopped from spreading!

Let us stay away from the blame/gossip game!

TRANSLATION

Why talk of the Profound, when one is stuck in the vastness of the business of talk, hurt and harmed?
It is like buried neck deep and trying to jump  sky high!
Not knowing the beauty of God, talking of all kinds of talk,
Is nothing but a garland of talk, there is not truth (Self) in it.
Oh! Nijaguru Svatantra Siddalingesvara, all such  have become a burden on the Earth!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, sharana Svatantra Siddalingesvara deplores the one who keeps talking for talking sake and misses the point and profound. He says such individuals are simply a burden on Earth.
The scope of talk is quite vast. It can cover a wide variety of topics to various degrees of depth. For some, talking becomes just a habit they cannot live without. They invent topics and keep talking. In this process, they hurt others and hurt themselves. Those who are hurt by them, in turn get involved on further talk to hurt the former. This jumble of point and counter point leads pain and suffering, nothing else. For those involved in such jumble, there is no time or inclination to think or talk of the profound – the profound meaning God or a profound topic!  For such people who have become habitual talkers, trying to talk about the profound is like trying to jump sky high while buried neck deep. Siddalingesvara says that not knowing the beauty of God, not internalizing the concept of the Self and the profound, all the talk is just weaving a garland of talk, it is not worth anything! In fact, such depthless talkers are just burden on Earth!

Although the Vachana is implying that the only worthwhile talk is that of the beauty of God, the essence behind is applicable to our daily lives. Our talk should be meaningful; it should make sense and should be well thought of. A philosopher said that there must be three gates a thought should go through before it is delivered as a talk: Is it necessary? Does it hurt anyone? Does it accomplish what is intended?

Let us think first and talk later!
