TRANSLATION

The language without depth, the colorful talk,
Both of these are false (useless), Sir!
Those who talk a lot ignore the truth,
They say ‘devotee is wife, the God is husband’, it is a lie, Sir!
Observing such people, I am ashamed oh Lord Guhesvara!

 COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Allama Prabhu laments on individuals who are fond of talking without a deep understanding of what they are saying and says he is ashamed of such individuals. He implies that every word we use should be meaningful and appropriate. The talk should not just be a colorful talk to impress the audience; it should be experience based; it should take the audience and the context into account; it should be appropriate, not just full of colorful words with the main aim of mesmerizing the audience. As we have seen from earlier posts, the words should be like pearls in a necklace (in vachana No. 2) and when spoken the Lord should appreciate them. Any talk short of these characteristics is useless.

Those who talk a lot ignore the truth. Indeed, their main aim is to show off their oratory skills. Since they have to do this quite often, they run out of truth and true knowledge of what they are talking about. They invent words and sentences and make them just colorful.

One can give a big sermon on the concept of the devotee is wife and the God is husband. They can define and describe duties and nature of both the parties in this relationship at length. They will have never understood the concept and the deep meaning behind it. Instead of portraying the unique bond between the devotee and the God implied by this concept and conveying that the devotee and the God are one, they go through the verbal exercise of describing this concept at length. Such exercises are useless.

Conscioulsy or unconsciously everyone makes mistakes, and get carried away with their tongue while speaking. Some realize about their mistakes. Only very few try to keep in mind to avoid those mistakes. Paying very close attention to what one speaks results in knowing their own self. When one thinks subtley about their spoken words, where they came from, what it meant to them, why those words came about, its effect on others (good or bad), unfolds their own true nature to themselves and quietens thier mind.

We are now in the era of ‘marketing’. We have to market everything we can offer to ‘succeed’ in today’s world. Capability to mesmerize the audience is what is needed. It is easy to Google and find the material for our talk instantaneously. The problem comes when the audience probes on the topic of talk and what is said. Without the depth of knowledge, such talks can become useless and embarrassing.

It is interesting that Allama Prabhu commented on this aspect of individuals. Apparently, the human behavior was the same as it is now during his times also!

Sharanas paid a high respect to two aspects in life: Behavior (Nade) and Talk (Nudi). The advocated a behavior that sets an example for others to follow. They advocated a talk that is always appropriate and meaningful and matches the behavior.

Let us always weigh our words!

TRANSLATION

Ignoring that which came your way and desiring that which has not come your way (i.e. Ignoring what you have and desiring what you don’t have), why are you worrying and getting tired?
The Ant collects the food to last for six months; though small, its desire is huge.
Does the enormous bodied Elephant desires for what is needed in the future? No!
See the difference between the Ant and the Elephant, Sirs!
Why are you dying of desire, the God knows and He is there to protect you!
Everything is in the hands of Lord SvataMtra SiddhalingEshvara!

COMMENTARY

Sharana SvatantraSiddalingesvara comments on the cycle of desire we are stuck in. He questions why everyone is so ignorant of that they have and always be after that they don’t have? Why is everyone so engulfed in this cycle of desire, worried and getting unnecessarily tired? He uses two simple scenarios to drive his point home. The Ant is small and possibly can get by with a minute amount of food. But, its nature is to always collect food and store it for the rainy days and winter.  It is preoccupied in this collect and store mode to a level where it does not have any time or inclination to enjoy the food it has now. It is not living in the moment! The huge bodied Elephant on the other hand, just enjoys tumbling trees and gulping the greenery. It cares less what happens tomorrow. It will worry about it when it gets hungry again! It is said that the Lion hunts only when it is hungry. When it is full, it does not touch a deer dancing over it. The Vachana ends with a reminder that the God knows what is needed and He is there to protect us. Everything is under His control!

It is natural for us to desire higher income, closer friendship, better mansion to live in, higher position in society than what we have now, etc.  The Vachana is not dissuading us to get away from desiring better things; it is advocating enjoying what we already have to the full extent, be thankful for it, and not ignore it in the pursuit of the next thing, creating unnecessary stress on ourselves.  The obvious question then is, if we are completely content with what has come our way, how can we ‘progress’ to higher things?    Should we not plan to achieve higher and better levels?

Sharanas believed in giving 100% to their profession. They also believed in minimizing their wants and needs and distribute the excess to benefit the community.  In practice, we cannot be Omar Khayyams living day by day; neither we should be ‘ants’ obsessed with accumulating materials! We need to strike a balance and find our content levels. This is only possible when we achive the maturity of assessing the importance of what we do and what we have and decide how to be in the moment.

Consider a vacation coming up in the near future. Obviously you have to plan on where you are going, how to get there, what to do there, where to stay, how much to spend, etc.  Planning is neccessary however being obsessive about planning can ruin the vocation. But, once you get there, enjoy it! Not everything that happens while you are there might be predictable and planned for. If unforeseen occurs, take it in the stride and don’t blame yourself for not planning and anticipating it.

The above example is of a mundane every day journey.  The journey of life is a bit more complicated. Very few accurate maps are available. But, we have a Guide in God. When we come close to Him, the journey gets planned and becomes smooth and savvy! This requires that we accept Him and reach Him within us, meaning develop the equanimity and maturity to live in the moment, and finding the appropriate level of contentment! Buddha said ‘the desire is the root cause of all sufferings’!

Let us discipline our Desire!

Being in the cycle of life and death you created,
I am saddened witnessing this!

COMMENTARY

Sharana Svatantra Siddalingeswara comments on the state of individuals in whose mind questions such as ‘where did I come from? How did I get this body?’ do not arise, saying that such individuals suffer through the cycle of life and death (happiness and sadness) forever and never come out of it.

A child with all his innocence and peaceful mind asks innumerable questions of his parents. Where did the tree come from? Where was the seed? Who planted it? Why does it need water? on and on and on. Parents and others answer some of these questions and eventually run out of either their patience or the answers to questions. They tend to discourage the child from asking or divert him to other activities to escape from questions. The child gets conditioned as he grows up and stops asking questions beyond what he can immediately understand. All the other distractions like education, finding the job, earning a living, acquiring wealth, friends, etc. become his prime concern. He is now a full-fledged participant of the mundane cycle of happiness and sadness. He seldom has any time or inclination to question where he came from, where is he going, what will happen, etc.

The key to keep the questioning alive is to retain the innocence and peace of mind and develop the subtle curiosity and desire to probe beyond what can be just seen or heard. One has to do this on his own. Only peaceful and innocent nature will be able to perceive the divine principle behind each and every aspect and object. Siddalingesvara is sad to see that the humans are so entangled in this mundane cycle of happiness and sorrow, albeit created by the Lord and urges us to get out of it and go back to our innate innocent, peaceful and probing nature that we have lost. Only when such innocence and peace sets in, that we will be able to develop the subtle sight to see the divine in and behind all we have. Only then, we can achieve the equanimity needed to take both happiness and sadness in their stride; neither of them will tip us out of our balance; only then we can be independent of the cycle of life and death.

Let us regain the peace and innocence we were born with!

TRANSLATION

When the disciple with no untruth held the feet of the ever awake and aware Guru (teacher),
The non-symbolic Linga (God) was granted,
And he becomes one with it and the trifold being (body, mind and soul) became null.
The teacher hid in the disciple who received this marvelous lesson!
What can I compare this act of the teacher turning into disciple and the two becoming one, Sir!
And the teacher and the disciple becoming one with Lord SvataMtrasiddhaliMgEshvara!

COMMENTARY

We have said that our ultimate goal in the spiritual path is to become one with God. This is self-realization, achieving Moksha, or achieving the Null. We have said that the Guru (teacher) and Linga (the icon) or the aids for achieving this state in the spiritual journey. In the previous posting we said that the Guru is the living form of the Lord and Linga is the symbolic form. Guru initiates the spiritual consciousness in the disciple and guides him. The disciple starts with the iconic Linga, realizes that which is beyond the icon, traverses the ocean of senses and realizes the true self.

In this Vachana, Sharana Svatantra Siddalingesvara provides the true attributes of the Guru and the disciple to make the spiritual journey possible and a success. We have said that there must be an intense desire on the part of disciple. The Guru then supplements this desire with the appropriate knowledge. To be able to do this, the Guru must be one who is ever awake and aware. The disciple must be the one with no untruth (no "lies" within him). That is, it is not enough that the disciple does not ‘lie’; the concept of lying is completely foreign to him, in the sense that he has completely internalized the concept of the Self and knows nothing else. He does not need any aid to go beyond the realm of his senses and their influence on him. The ever awake guru leads such a disciple to realize that which is beyond the icon. The Guru and the disciple become one and the same; the Guru merges with the disciple and the two merge with the  Lord.

Millions of thoughts enter our mind constantly. We become victims of these thoughts. We tend to justify our actions. The true disciple is the one who is beyond this thought cycle and has won the influence of senses. The thought of justifying his actions does not even enter his mind. This is the true state of the disciple with untruth!

The lesson then is that one should have an intense desire to achieve something, acquire the knowledge pertinent to it, go beyond the icons and internalize the truth. The truth in the context of this Vachana is Him dwelling in the Self.

Let us become knowledgeable and go beyond the icons!
