VACHANA IN ENGLISH

Holding the net of illusion as wide as the Universe,
The fisherman called death has spread the net of illusion, you see Sir!
I cannot see a single person who is out of that net.
The death has filled those who know and those who are called knowledgeable in the bag of this net.
Being trapped in that bag of net, the whole Universe is dying.
Lord Nijaguru Svatantra Siddhalingeshavara protects those who are aware of Him!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Sharana Svatantra Siddhalingeshavara comments on the concepts of death and illusion. He calls the death a "fisherman" who has cast his net of illusion (Maya) wide enough to capture everyone in the whole Universe. Both those who are knowledgeable and those who are known to be knowledgeable are trapped in the bag made of the net of illusion. All of them are dying having stuck in this net. The salvation from this net is only to those who are aware of the Lord!

Death is inevitable; but life has to go on. We are fully alive and are going through the ups and downs of life. The ups make us feel happy and proud, although beneath we are worried that the factors bringing us the ups (health, wealth, friendships, etc.) may go away. We are saddened by the downs; we never console ourselves that the downs could be temporary also. The emotional tides we go through are because of our ignorance of the temporariness of   the happiness and the sadness. This is the net of illusion we are trapped in. The solution is to attain the equanimity of mind wherein we stay unperturbed by the ups and downs of life and take them as they come. This state is called ‘stitha prajnatha’’, the state of steady wisdom. Sthitha Prajna is the concept of a free being that lives in this world and appears to be like anybody else. He is one whose mind has become absolutely still, quietened, and tranquil. When all desires of the heart have rested and the heart finds joyous satisfaction in itself because it has found that all joy exists within, independent of external factors, then one is spoken of as a person of steady wisdom, a Sthitha Prajna. A Sthitha Prajna, does what is necessary for the betterment of humanity with a completely tranquil mind, unperturbed. A person whose mind is tranquil will not react to situation in a way that causes harm to others because he sees everybody as his own self. This is the individual who is aware of Him that the Lord protects!

Let us pierce the net of illusion!

TRANSLATION
Without grasping that which is visible, and seeking and trying to grasp the invisible,
results in tiredness (frustration), you see!
Seeing that which is visible and following the path shown by the Guru (teacher),
the invisible can be seen, Lord Guhesvara!

COMMENTARY
We can always see a visible entity and grasp all its visible characteristics. We can never see an invisible entity. All efforts to see such an entity would be fruitless and result in frustration. We should see the visible and if the invisible is perceivable, we should develop the keen perception to perceive and experience it. Allama Prabhu provides a path for such perception of the invisible, yet omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient God. He says that the guidance of the Guru (teacher) is the way to develop that perception. Guru is the visible form of the invisible God. Sharanas provided Ishtalinga as the visible icon of the Universal (super) soul. When the individual develops an intense desire to perceive God, he finds a Guru to help him set him in the spiritual path. The individual follows Guru’s guidance and crosses the ocean of senses in the journey of self-realization and finds Him in his own Self (Atman, or soul). One cannot see God; he is beyond the scope of our senses; one has to experience Him.
A popular simile to describe God is that we can see the brightness spread by an electric bulb, but we cannot see the electrical current that made the bulb glow. The current is the God and His effect that we can see is the brightness. Some of us bright ones argue that we can feel the electricity by stripping the cover over the wire and touching it!  We must have received the knowledge that we can strip the wire and touch it to feel the electricity from someone (the Guru).
The message of this Vachana is that we should learn to distinguish between that which is visible versus that which is only perceivable. We should not tire ourselves in trying to see the invisible. We should cultivate ourselves to perceive the invisible through pertinent knowledge provided by the knowledgeable (Guru).

Let us learn to distinguish between the visible and the invisible!

TRANSLATION
The fire in the stone, can it burn?
The tree in the seed, can it make sounds?
He is not seen, He does not flash (shine) to anybody!
The one who dwells within knows the being of the God Guhesvara!

COMMENTARY
In this Vachana, Allama Prabhu describes how the God is present (hidden) in every element of the nature and what is needed to see Him. The fire is hidden in the stone. It does not burn as long as it is left alone. It sparks only when the stone rubs against another. The friction is needed to get the fire out; it is not obvious or visible. A tiny seed hides the whole tree. When inside the seed, the tree does not make any sounds it would make otherwise as a grown up tree swayed by the wind. The God is thus not visible, He is not easily seen and he does not shine (flash) to anybody. Allama Prabhu says that only that individual who dwells within (himself) would know the being of God in everything. The subtleness to see within and enjoy the self is a must to see Him.
Being immersed in our daily lives, we do not pay attention to subtle aspects of nature and the entities around us. We can see the stone, but never pay attention to the fire in it. Even when we create fire by rubbing a stone with another, we assume that it is obvious that the friction created the fire. We might even be proud that we can create the fire. Our observation in general is not subtle enough to see the fire in the stone or think of the one who might have created it!
We sow the seed, grow the tree, harvest the fruits and enjoy them. We relish the shade on sunny days and enjoy the cool breeze and the music created by the tree. We never think about the tree hidden in the seed; neither we question how and who might have packed the tree in the seed.
To be able to see the God in all aspects of the nature, we need to develop the capability to see and perceive the subtleness in them. This is only possible for those individuals who have matured themselves out of the worldly aspects and enjoy the self. Only those can see the God!
In our previous postings we have said that it is important to develop God mindedness as early in our lives as possible. We have said that we should see the God within us and within all those around us. This requires us to develop the subtle nature of seeing the good in all and ignoring the faults of others. Mahatma Gandhi said ‘how can I find faults in others when I am not faultless?’ This is only possible when we first mature to the level of seeing within and enjoying the self.

Let us travel within and become subtle observers!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Sharana Hadapada Appanna comments on how commoners spend all their lives in mundane activities, eventually get dissatisfied with them and try to reach God at the last stages of life. He says that the God will not be available for them.
We spend lot of time playing the games we like and get unlimited fun out of it. We seldom think of anything else, we seldom like anything else. We are immersed in these games.
We spend all our resources in acquiring friends and enjoying their company. Nothing else occurs to us. Our minds would not entertain any other thought!
We enjoy going places and seeing sights. We never consider it a waste of time. Nothing else makes sense to us. We are on top of the world with our mundane lives!
Eventually, all these mundane activities seem boring to us. Appanna equates this boredom to the ‘dinner time’ when we are hungry and long for becoming one with God. Some even start complaining that they are actually suffering all these activities of playing, socializing and working. Appanna calls them cowards and says that they will not be able to reach God with these last minute wishes!
Appanna is advocating introducing Godliness to our lives early and stay with it through the life with all the respect and attention it deserves. We must make Him an important part of our life journey, and not just the eventual destination!
It is very easy to say and very apt to feel that ‘I did it all’, ‘it is all mine’ when success comes to us. It is very easy to be immersed in our own games, social circles, sights and sounds. It takes lot of discipline to recognize that there is a super power which guides it all. The faster we get such realization in life, the easier it is to reach Him.

Let us make God our companion in life’s journey!

This kind of bad companionship leads to blindness (error) and risks the salvation, You see, Akhandeshvara!
COMMENTARY
In this Vachana Sharana Shanmukaswamy addresses the attributes of true ‘SaMga’ the companionship or company. Man is a social being. He strives and longs for the company of others. We say that the birds of the same feather flock together, implying that there must be something in common for a companionship to develop. The question then is ‘what should be the quality or attribute of this common entity?’ since we are branded by the company we keep. We are told that to sore like an Eagle, we must be in the company of Eagles.
Shanmukaswamy says that a true companionship is one in which the mind of one acts as a mirror and reflects the mind of the other. The companionship thus facilitates the view of your own mind. It enables you to introspect, analyze and shape your own mind. In a true companionship, the perceptions of all the individuals involved would be the same. They all think alike.  Their knowledge blends together. Their understanding has a common basis. In a true companionship, the natures, feelings and views of all involved merge and evolve together. Thus, a true companionship is the one that leads towards salvation and self-realization. A bad companionship on the other hand leads to blindness and downfall and takes one away from salvation.
Companionship is a must. Companionships form automatically as we work for the same company, as we travel by the same bus or subway to work daily, as we see each other in common gatherings, as we belong to the same professional society, etc. It is then up to us to develop the companionship into a fruitful one for all the individuals involved. It should be an equal partnership taking us to the common goal in the spiritual or professional path. We must examine our relationships, cultivate the common traits that aid us in the positive directions and curb the negativity.

Let us reflect on our company we keep!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana addressed to Sharana Siddharaamayya, Allama Prabhu comments on the ways of the mind. He stresses on the importance of cleansing the mind to see the Lord, while saying that the process of cleansing the mind does not come easy.

We have said that the inherent nature of the mind is to wander. Mind is a monkey on steroid in general.  It is a must to control the mind although controlling it is not easy and requires appropriate knowledge, constant awareness and effort.

Allama Prabhu wonders how one can say he/she has washed and cleansed the mind. The mind is so dynamic that it fools and harasses even those who say they have controlled it. Indeed, in our daily lives we are subjected to all the six passions of mind (kama – desire, kroda – anger, lobha – greed, moha- delusory emotional attachment, madha – pride, maatsarya – jealousy) on a constant basis. We notice that we are being subjected to one or more of these and make every effort to get out of their influence. This freedom from passions lasts a little while and the mind reverts to the same as soon as we start feeling that we have conquered the passion and controlled or cleansed the mind.

In general, we use the polluted mind through which we try to come up with mechanisms to cleanse the mind. How can a polluted mind cleanse itself?

Allama Prabhu declares those who say that they know the beauty of the Lord, should have to be without a mind! He is not implying that these individuals are mindless. He is stressing that to see the Lord one must have a pure and unpolluted mind, meaning that they should have conquered all the passions of the mind. Indeed, seeing the beauty of the Lord and becoming one with the Lord are synonymous to one being the Lord. When one sheds the six passions, he/she achieves the cleanse mind and becomes the Lord. He sees the Lord in everyone and everything around him/her.

Let us Mind the Mind!
