TRANSLATION

The wind that breaks the trees and throws them to the sky, does it have a form or is it formless? Please tell me Sir, if you know!
The disease that strikes and kills strong animals such as Elephant, Lion and Tiger, does it have a form or is it formless? Please tell me Sir, if you know!
The sleep that destroys the consciousness, without being seen or heard, does it have a form or is it formless? Please tell me Sir, if you know!
Thus, no one can comprehend the nature (secret) of the servant of the servant!
How is it possible to say that ‘I know the nature of that which is without beginning’?
If given a form, it is a word; if considered formless, it is nothing!
He is far away from the scope of both of these, you see!
Without the benevolence of the teacher one cannot comprehend my Lord KapilasiddhamallikaarjunaliMga

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara describes the formless God, through three examples.

The wind (hurricane) breaks the plants and trees and throws them towards the sky. Does the wind has a form or is it formless? The wind cannot be seen. But, we cannot say that it is not there, since we can see its effect. The disease pushes strong animals like Lion, Tiger and Elephant to their death. Does the disease has a form or is it formless? We cannot say that the disease is not there, since we can see its effect. Along the same lines, the sleep destroys the consciousness without being seen or heard. Does it have a form or is it formless? We cannot say that it is not there, since we feel its effect.

Siddarameswara seems to be referring to Basavanna in the next line of the Vachana. Basavanna always called himself the servant of the (servants) devotees of Lord Shiva. Siddarameswara wonders how one can comprehend the formless God, when one cannot even comprehend the realized soul Basavanna who is right in front of (not formless) them.

When we cannot comprehend the one with a form and in front of us, how can we comprehend that ultimate truth and that which is without a beginning? If we try to give Him a form, it just becomes a set of words. If we say He is formless, it implies ‘nothing’. Siddarameswara says that He is beyond the scope of both of these. The only way to comprehend Him is through the benevolence of a Guru, the teacher. Benevolence of the Guru is the light that emanates from within; it is the intense desire to realize the ultimate truth.

We addressed the concept of Guru in Vachana 87. It is said that the Guru looks out for disciple ready to receive the knowledge. It is also said that when an intense desire and thirst for knowledge and awareness appear in the disciple, the Guru appears. These concepts imply that the Guru is an individual. It is important to realize that the concept of Guru is a formless principal that comes to light, when one develops the intense desire to realize the ultimate. When that happens, the disciple starts examining everything with a new, subtle sight. He begins to admire the influence (effect) of some formless entity on and in everything.  Obtaining that subtle sight is the benevolence of the Guru.

Let us develop the subtle sight to see the ultimate truth!

Animals fall for the green grass,

The valiant fall for the war,
The scholars fall for the assembly,
All these are dumbstruck by illusion; they are not free of it.
I offer my salutations to the feet of that great Jangama, who stays uninterested, even after multiple exposures to these! Oh, kapilasiddhamallikaarjunaa!

COMMENTARY

Sharana Siddarameswara has illustrated the roles of the Guru (teacher), the disciple, the Linga (icon) and Jangama (the roaming ascetic) through the Vachanas in our previous postings. We have called Jangama a roaming ascetic, an illumined individual dedicating himself to spreading the awareness and knowledge to the community, a dynamic individual in the sense that his knowledge is not static, but keeps deepening and sharpening all the time. Thus, the immediate association of the tag of Jangama to an individual who happens to dress in saffron robes, chants the Lord’s names continuously and visits his disciples, is not accurate. Siddarameswara qualifies Jangama with four scenarios of common occurrence, in this Vachana.

Animals are attracted by the green grass. It is their staple food. They quit all other activities when they see the green grass and start consuming it. That is the nature of the animal.

The role of Brahmin sect in the four-sect society was to be in charge of knowledge and impart it to others.  As a compensation for this activity, the society would offer them food and other items. As the times progressed, the Brahmin forgets his role in the society, but concentrates on food and feasts. This is not to ridicule all Brahmins as a sect. This is just an illustration of how great ideas turn into rituals. In turn this ritualistic living becomes the norm and accepted behavior.

The soldier is eager to get in the midst of war; he is more interested in exhibiting his bravery and might even create wars to satisfy himself that his bravery is noticed.

The scholar is fond of participating in assemblies and congregations to show off his knowledge. He never thinks in terms of using the knowledge he has to contain his ego , rather he enhances his ego in trying to exhibit his accomplishments.

Siddarameswara says that all the above instances indicate the participants consumed by illusion, rather than overcoming it. He offers salute to those individuals who do not get attracted by opportunities to just show off , rather they utilize their knowledge and awareness for containing the ego, realizing the ultimate truth and spreading it appropriately. He calls such individuals, the great Jangamas. These are the individuals who do not accept everything they come across freely. They examine and analyze every aspect of what they see very carefully, before accepting it. They are always awake and dynamic!

Let us grasp the real purpose of what we see and what we have!

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Sharana Siddarameswara   emphasizes the roles of Guru (Teacher) and Linga (icon), and clarifies the meaning of Jangama (the dynamic). In the first line of the Vachana he says that he realized Linga (God) through the teacher, but not through the Linga (icon). Recall that the role of Guru is to impart awareness to the disciple, mark the occasion with the offer of icon, and moving forward to other disciples. The disciple does not have any use for the icon once he has gained the awareness and lost his ignorance. As such, one does not realize Linga (God) through the Linga (icon). The Linga (icon) is simply a stone carved out of a larger stone. It does not offer anything if the awareness for what it stands for is forgotten.

The second line of the Vachana says that one attains the awareness (fruitfulness) through Linga (God), but not through offering fruits and chanting.  Siddarameswara is emphasizing that offering fruits and flowers and continuous chanting does not take one towards realization of God.

The third line provides the meaning of Jangama as that which is not static. We have said that the Jangama is a realized ascetic who has taken the vow of spreading his realization to the community at large by moving from disciple to disciple. Siddarameswara interprets Jangama as the non-static awareness, meaning that the knowledge and what one knows should not stay static; it should continue to improve upon itself. One should not assume that he/she knows it all. The thirst for enhancing one’s awareness and knowledge should continue forever.  Siddarameswara says that one attains salvation by being dynamic. Moksha (salvation) is the ultimate state. As such it can be viewed as static.  Siddarameswara says that static nature does not lead to salvation.

It is said that Siddarameswara was a builder of temples and tanks. He was an avid worshipper of the static form of Shivalinga in these temples. He believed that building tanks as offering immense service to the community since these tanks became sources of water for the community.  Once Allama Prabhu meets him and makes him aware of a higher cause than just being a philanthropic citizen of the community. Siddarameswara takes Allama Prabhu as his Guru. This Vachana seems to illustrate his own experience and journey towards the realization of the ultimate principle.

Let us be aware and dynamic!

TRANSLATION

When the body is the seat and the life breath is the Linga (icon),
Sir, where is the need for another icon?
Can the formless be united with through the icon, in this world?
Holding the destroyable (icon) in hand, if one says “I will see that which is to be perceived (to be seen)”,
Pray tell Oh Prabhu (Allama Prabhu)! how is it possible uniting with the Lord Kapilasiddhamallinathayya?

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana, Sharana Siddarameswara continues with his thoughts on the role of icon from the previous Vachana where he said that the icon is not needed (becomes useless) once the devotee gains the awareness of the Lord within. He says that the body is the seat of the Linga(icon, symbol of God) and the life breath (Prana) is the Linga(icon). As such, where is the need for another icon? How can an icon unite one with the formless?  He questions as to how one can say that he/she has seen that to be seen ( perceived) and imperishable, holding a perishable icon in the hand. Siddarameswara is addressing Allama Prabhu to confirm his thoughts.

An icon is just an icon. It is perishable. One has to go past it. If one holds on to the icon, he/she will not perceive the omniscient, formless principle. Uniting with Him requires a separation from the icon.
Icons, idols and the rituals associated with them may be needed to develop the initial awareness of the concept of God, i.e. for one to become God minded. But, one has to go past these and realize the God within.

Let us not quit moving inwards!

KANNADA COMMENTARY

The one who tranformed the carved stone into a Linga is the Guru (Teacher).
The one who wore the Linga is the disciple.
The Guru who gave Linga, went away,  Is the stone he gave still a Linga?
Although a stone carved out stone is still a stone, he made it in to a Linga;
The Linga now is without worship; Linga without worship is a stone.
The Linga of the Guru who went away is penetrable (seen through),
Penetrating it shows no essence!
One catches a boat to cross a river.
After crossing, he leaves it and goes away!
The boat thus left is useful for others, but the Linga (after seen through) is not of any use, you see! KapilaSiddhaMallikaarjunaa.

COMMENTARY

In this Vachana Sharana Siddarameswara clarifies the roles of Guru (Teacher), Sishya (Disciple) and Linga (the Icon). The role of Guru is to impart knowledge and awareness to his disciple. He transforms a mere stone into Linga (an Icon, Idol or any symbol) and offers it to the disciple, meaning that he has implanted the deep awareness in the disciple. For the disciple, wearing and worshipping the Linga means deepening the knowledge and awareness he just received into the light in his quest for self-realization or finding Him within. Any other type of external worshipping has no meaning.  After offering the Linga, the Guru moves on to other disciples. Once he moves away, if the disciple forgets the worship (i.e. sharpening his awareness) the Linga becomes a stone.  In fact, Siddarameswara implies that the Linga is not needed once the disciple attains awareness. As the icon of awareness the Linga has served its purpose. It is now just a stone. Siddarameswara is urging us to go beyond the symbology offered by the icon, the Linga or an Idol. He is asking us to get away from meaningless rituals and worshipping, instead develop a keen and deep awareness of the God within us and strive to reach the ultimate truth.

The Vachana ends with a beautiful scenario. A boat is useful to cross a river. Once used, the traveler leaves it on the banks for the other travelers. The boat is useful for others. But, Siddarameswara says that the Linga is not of any use to others, meaning that the awareness is so personal – it is yours, and only yours!

Let us be disciples of the truest kind!

With all the heightened excitement and festivities, look how extravagant these God’s festivals have become!
God’s festival has just become a sweet meet for your tongue, rather than a festival of your birth!
Oh! Dense headed hauteur!

COMMENTARY

From this Vachana of Siddarameswara, it is apparent that even in the twelfth century, people celebrated festivals with lot of excitement and extravaganza. The extravagance has taken a much higher level now a days. We spend a lot of money and time on these festivals. We build bigger and bigger idols; our processions get larger and more elaborate; we block city streets to conduct these festivities; we fight to prove that our idol is bigger or more beautiful than other’s. We do all this in the name of God, but we forget Him completely. Siddarameswara says that these festivals have become a means of devouring sweet meets to keep our tongues satisfied. He questions if we ever celebrate festival of our birth. That means awareness of god should become the festival of our life to gain freedom from the cycle of life and death. He uses fairly harsh words in calling one a dense headed hauteur, if he/she just celebrates these festivals without becoming aware of the God.

The word ‘Kabbila’ means ‘hunter’. A hunter typically spends all his time in hunting animals. He boasts about how large or fierce an animal he killed. He feeds on the animals he hunts and does not think of anything else until the next day or the time his hunger propels him to hunt again. Siddrameswara compares people who simply celebrate festivals without becoming aware of God, to such hunters.

Celebrations and festivities are not wrong by any means. But, concentrating on the extravagance to show off what we have or what we can do; celebrating to prove one is superior to others; just following the rituals in the name of celebrating the God; etc. are not useful. What is most important is the awareness of God and striving to find Him within.

Let us always be aware of what we are celebrating!

KANNADA COMMENTARY
